Pressure Shooting

Drill Scoring goals remains the single most difficult task in soccer. The modern game demands that midfielders and even defenders be able to move forward into attacking roles to support, or possibly even finish, a strike on the opponent's goal. Even so, the primary responsibility of scoring goals still rests upon the shoulders of the forwards, or strikers, who must possess the ability to instantly release shots given any half chance. The ball always attracts a crowd, particularly when it is near the opponent's goal area, so front running players (strikers and wingers) will usually find themselves with little space and time in which to operate. The ability to shoot powerfully and accurately, without first setting up the ball, is a must. This is commonly called " shooting first-time." Players can prepare to take advantage of scoring opportunities by practicing shooting skills in a training environment that simulates the game-imposed pressures of limited time, restricted space, physical fatigue, and/or challenging opponents. The following drill incorporates three of those pressures; challenging opponents are not included. Number of Players: Group of three

Organization: Play on one end of a regulation field with a goal centered on the end line. Three players participate: one positions as a shooter, one as a server, and one as the goalkeeper. The shooter stations 25 yards from the end line, back to the goal. The server positions 30 yards from goal, facing the shooter (and the goal) with a supply of 10 to 12 balls. The keeper positions to defend the goal.

Procedure: The server rolls a ball past the shooter towards the goal. The shooter turns quickly, sprints to the ball, and shoots to score. The shooter must strike the ball first-time and return immediately to the start position. The server then plays another ball past the shooter and the sequence is repeated. Continue the drill at maximum speed until the supply of balls is depleted. The goalkeeper tries to save all shots. The shooter gets 1 point for each shot on goal and 2 points for each goal scored. Players rotate positions after each round of shots. The player who totals the most points wins. Time: Repeat the shooting sequence at maximum speed and intensity; each player takes three to five rounds of shots.

Coaching Tips: Encourage the shooter to accelerate to the ball as quickly as possible. Players should alternate shooting with left and right feet. Coaches can make the drill more difficult by increasing the speed of repetition, the number of repetitions, and/or the duration of the drill. Note: Reduce the shooting distance to 12 to 15 yards for younger players.
