Receiving Low Skipping Shots
The following drill is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level goalkeepers. Accurate service is required to make the drill flow smoothly.
Number of Players: Goalkeepers pair with a partner for competition
Objectives: To develop the goalkeeper's ability to successfully execute the forward vault technique
Organization: Use markers to outline a rectangular area of 15 by 25 yards for each pair of goalkeepers. Use cones or flags to represent a 6-yard wide goal positioned at the center of each end line. Goalkeepers (#1 & #2) station in opposite goals. Keeper #1 has possession of the ball to begin.
Procedure: Goalkeeper #1 attempts to score by throwing or half-volleying the ball past Goalkeeper #2. The ball should skip off of the ground directly in front of Keeper #2 who must use the forward vault technique to save. Keeper #2 may advance several steps off of the goal line to narrow the shooting angle. Goalkeeper #1 can follow-up his or her initial shot and attempt to score any rebounds. After each shot and/or save both players return to their respective goal. Keepers alternate turns attempting to score against one other. Award 1 point for each shot save; 2 points for a shot saved and held without rebound. The goalkeeper who totals the most points wins the competition. Time: 15 minutes, or a predetermined number of shots
Coaching Tips: Encourage use of the forward vault technique to smother the shot and secure the ball between forearms and chest. Elbows and forearms should be positioned beneath the ball to prevent it from bouncing free. This drill is not appropriate for young, physically immature players. |
