Touch and Shoot

Scoring from an Indirect Free Kick

Number of Players: Five; two teams of two shooters plus a neutral goalkeeper

Objectives: To improve players' ability to score from indirect free kicks. The exercise is most appropriate for mature (high school and older) players who possess sufficient skill and strength to strike the ball on goal with power and accuracy

Organization: Play on one end of a regulation field with a regulation-size goal centered on the end line. The penalty area (18 yards by 44 yards) should be marked. A neutral goalkeeper stations in the goal. Award one team the ball to begin.

Procedure: The team with the ball attempts to score from an indirect free kick spotted outside of the penalty area. The two-player defending team can form a wall 10 yards from the ball to block the direct route to goal. The attacking team executes an indirect free kick - one player touches the ball right or left and the second player runs onto it and strikes it first-time at goal. The defensive wall is not permitted to move until the shot is taken. The goalkeeper attempts to save all shots. The attacking team attempts 10 indirect free kicks in succession from various spots outside of the penalty area; each player takes 5 shots. Teams then switch positions and repeat the round. Play a total of five rounds, with each team taking a total of 50 indirect free kick shots. Award 1 point for each shot on goal saved by the keeper; award 2 points for a goal scored. The team scoring the most points wins the competition. Time: Total of 50 shots for each team

Coaching Tips: For variation: 1) use 4 players in the defensive wall; 2) require direct free kicks; 3) require players to bend, or swerve, the trajectory of their shots.
