| Make Play Predictable |
The objectives of team attack and team defense are in direct opposition. A primary aim of the attacking team is to create as many possible passing/dribbling/scoring options as possible in order to make it more difficult for the defending side to anticipate what it will do next. The defending team attempts to counter this tactic by making the play as predictable as possible. This is accomplished by reducing the number of passing options available to the player on the ball (which makes his or her play more predictable), and by channeling play into an area where the space, and consequently the time, is limited as well. For example, if the player on-the-ball is forced to dribble into the space between the sideline and the defender marking him or her, the space through which he or she can pass the ball forward has been reduced. He or she has fewer potential options and as a result the play has become more predictable. Chalk one up for the defense! The defense can achieve the same result by channeling an attacker into the space protected by a covering defender.
