When we think of the goalkeeper position it is natural to envision a series of acrobatic saves, or the keeper diving courageously at the foot of an oncoming attacker to prevent a breakaway score. In reality, such situations occur rather infrequently. If the team organizes a solid defense the majority of saves will be of the routine variety. As a consequence, the ability of the goalkeeper to execute the routine play on a consistent basis is actually more important than his or ability to make the occasional spectacular play. By developing the techniques used to receive the various types of shots directed at goal, as well as the skills used to receive and control balls crossed or served into the goal area, the goalkeeper can avoid costly errors and at the same time perform with a high level of consistency. This article will discuss the methods used to receive (rolling) ground balls. All techniques are performed with the goalkeeper starting in the "ready position".
