Coaches Corner > Organizing a Solid Team Defense

Summary

Summary
Team defense exists on an individual, group and team basis. Individual players must be prepared to successfully match-up and compete in the one-versus-one situations that invariably occur throughout the game. They must physically fit, understand their role in the overall system, and demonstrate the determination and desire needed to fulfill that role. Individual talent is only one piece of the puzzle however. A collection of talented players will not necessarily form a top defensive side if they are unable to mesh their abilities in an organized and disciplined manner to achieve smoothly functioning, cohesive unit.
The fundamental objectives of team defense remain the same regardless of whether the team employs a zonal, man-to-man, or combination-of-both marking system.

These objectives include:
Limit the opponent's time on the ball
Deny vital attacking space
Make the play as predictable as possible
