| Limit Time |
A fundamental equation always holds true with respect to the game of soccer :
Space equals time From a defensive point-of-view that means that the less space afforded to the opponent with the ball, the less time he or she will have to make decisions and execute skills. In most cases this will increase the likelihood that the player will make a mental or physical mistake. A team can accomplish this aim by applying immediate pressure at the point of attack. The defending player(s) nearest to the ball, commonly referred to as the first defender, should initiate an immediate challenge to reclaim possession. This is not meant to imply that the defender should rush forward in a reckless attempt to tackle the ball. The challenge must be controlled and calculated for the purpose of denying the attacker an opportunity to quickly penetrate via the pass or dribble. By denying penetration at the point of attack the defending team also gains precious moments in which defending players behind the ball (between the ball and their goal) can organize and regroup.
