RANDOM HOCKEY FACTS

March 17, 2009: On January 12, 2008, The Norfolk Admirals hosted the Hartford Wolf Pack in an AHL game.  In an effort to increase awareness for breast cancer, the ice was painted pink.  Commented Admirals Captain, Dan Jancevski, "We had no idea where the red line or the blue line were.  Everything just looked pink.’’
March 3, 2009: On December 7, 2008, in a midget AA game near Toronto between the Humber Valley Sharks and  the Mississauga North Stars, a linesman allegedly attacked, pushed to the ice and punched a 15 year old hockey player.  The league refused to release the linesman's name, but he was reportedly banned from the league completely and suspended from officiating any game in Canada for two years. 
February 23, 2009: On February 7, 1976, Maple Leaf Darryl Sutter set the single-game record with 10 points (6 goals, 4 assists) in an 11-4 victory over Boston.
February 16, 2009:  Georges Vezina, for whom the NHL goalie award is named, recorded the NHL's first shutout on February 18, 1918. He also recorded the first assist by an NHL goalie that same year.  He played during an era when goalies could not drop to the ice to block shots. He died of tuberculosis in 1926, only a few months after playing his last game.
February 9, 2009: When a 240-pound hockey player, skating at half his top speed, comes to a stop after having checked someone against the boards, the energy dissipated is enough to power an average household lightbulb for one minute.

Berkley High School Bears Varsity Hockey Team 2008-2009

WELCOME TO THE INTERNET HOME OF THE BERKLEY BEARS

You are at the Berkley Bears Varsity Hockey Website.  The Berkley High School Bears Hockey Team will be entering its tenth season this fall.  Bear VArsity hopefuls are playing a summer league with Madison Heights Lamphere, Royal Oak High, and Warren Mott, skating out of the Viking Ice Arena in Hazel Park.  The website contains links to the hockey schedule, roster, coaches, results, statistics, photos and much more.  We will soon be adding a store where you can get your Berkley Bears Hockey gear online!  Keep coming back often to check up on the Bears' 2009 summer season.  Also, feel free to sign in on our Guestbook.  GO BEARS!

Berkley Bears Varsity Hockey is a 100% self-funded hockey program.  It costs approximately $60,000 per year to run the Berkley High School Hockey program and it is funded entirely by fundraising and payments by the players and their families.  In addition to the Varsity program, Berkley High School Hockey Asssociation supports the Berkley High School Prep Hockey Team.  The Berkley High School Hockey Asssociation is a non-profit corporation, registered and in good standing with the State of Michigan.  Whether your an Berkley High School alumnus, relative, fan or acquaintance, please consider a donation to keep the Berkley High School Hockey Program alive and viable.  You can make a tax-deductible donation via PayPal at the link below to support your nephew, grandson or favorite Berkley High School Varsity or Prep player.  Thanks for your support of Berkley High School Hockey.  See you at the rink!

GAME POSTPONED
The game scheduled for Friday, June 12 has been rescheduled and will beplayed at 6:00 PM at Hazel Park on Sunday, June 14.  Also, games previously not listed have been added, so that the complete season is available on the schedule.
SUMMER LEAGUE HOCKEY INFO
Berkley hockey will be playing in a summer league skating out of Hazel Park. Check the schedule for games, but there will be one a week, finishing up on August 4.  Please contact Dave Siporin if you cannot make a game.  If you do not contact him, he will assume that you will be in attendance.
WEB SITE TRAFFIC DATA
In the last year, we have received quite a bit of traffic to our website.  According to our embedded stat counter, we have 39,749 unique visitors to the website, 19,955 were first time visitors with 19,794 returning visitors.  We had a total of 59,099 page loads.  Please keep this in mind when soliciting donors.  Over the summer, we will be upgrading the site to include banner ads and an online store.  Also, I would urge all of you who have pictures from this past season to forward them to Saulius , especially Senior Night pictures, team dinners and game time photos.  Thanks to all who visited the Site this past year and provided site content. If you have suggestions on how to improve the site, don't be bashful.

TEAM HANDBOOK ON WEBSITE
The link on the far right of the banner will now direct you to the BHSHA Team Handbook.  A hard copy will be available to all, which will include financial information.  However, you can review the Handbook online, too. Much thanks to Bob Michalak who prepared and formatted a great Handbook.

We have added a new feature.  Please review the Roster 1999-2009 Link above for a listing of all the players who have played for the Berkley Bears Varsity team from its inception.  You will note that there is significant information to add to the list, and we urge anyone with knowledge of errors, omissions or additional information to send them to Saulius Mikalonis so that we can make this information as complete and accurate as possible.
