Cortland Rebounds Against UR, Get Sunk Again By RutgersThe Red Dragons awoke from their winter break slumber in a big way on Friday January 30, against the University of Rochester with an impressive 10-1 victory. The win included goals from seven different Cortland State players, including a hat trick from Zack Haluszczak. Vinny Granice score his second on third goals of the season, Joe Laffin had three helpers, and Neal Purcell continued his late season surge with two assists of his own. Jeff Poccia played well, but wasn’t tested too much because of the strong defensive play by the Red Dragons.
The good feelings were short lived, however, because the next day the Red Dragons headed south to Rutgers University’s Protec Ponds Ice Center in Somerset, New Jersey, where they lost a tough match up, 8-5. Cortland was down 7-0 going into the final period and stormed back to make a game of it thanks to a natural hat trick by Mike Cerasoli, which included one on the power play, one shorthanded, and one even strength. Kyle Smith had three assists and Greg Huether got his second consecutive multi-point game as he collected a goal and an assist. Brian Chorny settled down in the 3rd period after a rough first two periods and the teams aggressive play from the final period on Saturday will hopefully rollover to this weekend as the Red Dragons host Cornell University on Saturday February 7, at 7:30pm and St. Bonaventure University on Sunday February 8, at 4:00pm.
We ask all the fans to come out and support your team at the Alumni Ice Arena this weekend because there is only one more home game following these two huge match ups.
