St. Timothy's Red is within striking distance of a franchise milestone. The team could reach an all-time .500 winning percentage for the first time ever. After a 6-24 opening season and two more losing seasons to follow, the team's success over the past two years can put them back over .500.
Eric Dummann has been on a tear lately, hitting safely in 14 of his last 15 at bats.
Up and Down Day St. Tim's Red Splits with Middletown UM
Team Red's offense had a roller coaster day in their doubleheader against B Divsion sluggers Middletown UM. The team overcame two separate deficits in game one to earn a win, while struggling to get runners on base and giving their lowest scoring effort of the season in the game two loss.
In game 1, Middletown UM came out on fire in the top of the 1st. After a walk, and two hits, the team's clean up hitter blasted a deep homerun to put St. Tim's down 4-0 in a hurry. The rally continued, as the Middletown offense plated seven runs before St. Tim's could get an out. A Paul Hoffman catch and throw double play kept the inning from getting worse. By the time Big Red got the third out, Middletown had scored 10 runs. St. Tim's battled back, scoring six runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, playing stellar defense, and eventually tying the game at 10 at the end of the third. Middletown built another lead late in the game. St. Tim's Red once again answered, putting 6 on the board in the 6th to take a 17-14 lead. The defense registered a 1-2-3 7th inning to close out the win. Eric Dummann went 4-for-4 with a team-high 4 runs to extend his perfect streak of 13 hits in 13 at bats. Schelby Buschman went 4-for-4 with a homerun and 4 RBI. He also earned the win with a solid pitching performance. Clark Spitzer, Eugene Kinjerski, and Scott Shepherd each went 3-for-4. Shepherd drove in 3 runs in the game. Kinjerski's streak of 16 straight at bats with a hit was snapped in the 4th inning.
St. Tim's seemed flat in the second game. Even though they held the powerful Middletown offense to only 11 runs, St. Tim's could only manage four runs of their own, falling 11-4. With the game tied 2-2 in the third inning, Middletown began to pull away, holding St. Tim's scoreless in four of the final six innings. Karyn Shepherd pitched a solid game and fielded her position well on the mound, but took the loss. She also had 2 hits at the plate. Eugene Kinjerski, Jim Miller, and Steve Shea each went 2-for-3. John Code added a 2-run homerun in the 1st inning. Kinjerski and Doc O'Connor drove in the team's other two runs.
The game 2 loss snapped the team's second six-game winning streak of the season. With the split, St. Tim's Red moves to 12-4, remaining 3 games ahead in the D Division, and on track for a top seed in the postseason tournament. The team has a bye week to celebrate the 4th of July. They return to action against C Division leader Frederick Church of the Bretheren (FCOB) who are 11-5.
