Lawrence Coffey and Wiley Casey in action against MTSU

WANTED!

Pics of our Sewanee Boys in ACTION!

The one thing we’ve missed this year are pictures of the Haze in action.

We’ve seen plenty of folks with their cameras at the ready during recent matches, but we have none of those pics to post in this year’s on-line album.

We’re looking for photos from the Bama, Chattanooga, MTSU, UT Martin, Tennessee Tech (maybe not), and Lee games  (there was lots of picture-taking that day)

If you have photos you’d like to submit, please e-mail us at sewaneerugby@msn.com and we’ll send you our mailing address (we'd prefer CD's please)
Thank you all in advance.

The Experimantal Law Variations
Kicked into Touch?
An International Rugby Board meeting held in London at the end of March, and involving administrators, coaches, players, referees and other involved stakeholders, voted to ditch most of the ELV's which have been trialled world-wide for more than 16 months.
Unfortunately, the IRB issued it's press release on April 1st, so while half the world took it seriously, others regarded it as a big April Fools joke.

The Haze Book Final Matches
Due to having to twice-cancel a Thursday night floodlight game with Bryan College because of poor weather, Sewanee work to fill the last rugby Saturdays
Sewanee have accepted an invatation from the University of Alabama to play in Tuscaloosa on April 28. Western Kentucky have agreed to play at Sewanee for the last game of the season, the Graduation Rugby Match on May 2nd

Sewanee Host Conference Championship

Lee overwhelm Tennessee Tech 46 – 12

For the second year running, Sewanee hosted the Conference Championship as interested by-standers, and the Haze enjoyed some vindication of their Championship efforts by seeing Lee, who just scraped by the Haze the previous week, demolish Tech 46 – 12 and take the Division 3, Conference A Championship Title.

The Haze and Lee Face Off in the Chattanooga Mud Bath

Lee takes the match 5 – 3

Due to poor weather, the Lee vs. Sewanee Conference play-off was played at the home field of Chattanooga RFC, and after the ‘Nooga men had played their own tough senior game against Knoxville. Despite the conditions, both Lee and the Haze played a hard, tough but always well-conducted game. Lee finished winning with one un-converted try to the Mark Wicker Sewanee penalty. Great credit must be paid to both teams for playing a great game of rugby in such difficult conditions. The match, however, brings to an end the Sewanee Championship challenge. Lee move forward to play Tennessee Tech for the conference championship

Tennessee Tech See-Off Lack-Luster Sewanee

Sewanee had lots of reason to explain their less than impressive performance and 25 – 0 loss against decent opposition.

Not least the change from a Saturday game to Sunday due to referee conflicts; two key player missing; another key player injured within 12 minutes of the start; the first game in three weeks - All these factors did not help the Haze in their first Conference play-off match. However, nothing can be taken away from Tech’s domination of the game and their 25 – 0 victory. Sewanee now need to defeat the Conference East Champions Lee University next week if their Championship ambitions are to stay alive.

The Haze Phase UTM

Saturday, January 31, 2009

In the bright sun of a late January afternoon, Sewanee Rugby outplayed the rookies from the University of Tennessee – Martin 32 – 0 to win their opening game of the 2009 USA Rugby South Division 3 Championship.

The only downside for the Haze was the loss of freshman center Corey Allen who sustained broken ribs scoring Sewanee’s fourth try.

Sewanee Prepare For The 2009 USA Rugby Championship

Three-time Division 3 Conference Champions Sewanee scrimmaged with Division 2 neighbors Vanderbilt University January 24 in preparation for the opening home game against University of Tennessee at Martin this Saturday.

In three 30-minute sessions, The Haze showed all the benefits of our hard work during the fall season winning the first period 8 – 5 with a try from freshman Tee Neely and a penalty goal by captain Mark Wicker. Vandy regrouped for the second and third session, winning both by nineteen points to nil, but neither score could dampen the determination and enthusiasm of the entire 24-man Sewanee squad, all of whom got to play.

“This was a decent performance by all the guys” observed Coach Brian Stringer. “We still have some work to do, but the quality and commitment is very evident” he added.

The Haze faces off against rookies UT Martin at home on Saturday, January 31 in the first game of the D3 Conference “A” West. With a weekend off on February 7, the Haze will be back in action on February 14, at home against the University of Memphis. On February 21 the Haze travels to Cookeville to face Tennessee Technical University in what could be the West Conference decider. On February 28 the winner of the West conference plays #2 from the East conference at home and the West #2 travels to play the East #1. The winners then move forward to play each other on March 7 to determine the Division 3, Conference “A” Champions and the #1 and 2 spot for the Division 3 quarter finals. #1 will have the home field advantage and play the #2 from the Palmetto (South Carolina) Conference. #2 will travel to play the #1 Deep South (Louisiana/West Florida) Champions.

 Goodbye Larry, Hello New Guys

Sewanee Rugby lose the services of their accomplished LAU All Star scrumhalf Lawrence Coffey, but are happy to say “Hello” to four new, talented players.

Sewanee junior and rugby tour de force scrumhalf Lawrence Coffey leaves the USA to spend his spring semester in Jordan. Although his talent and uncompromising commitment to Sewanee Rugby will be missed, the Haze is proud to welcome four talented players to its spring Matrix roster. Zac Atkins, also a member of the Sewanee football team, is a freshman from Dallas, TX; Matt Engle, a sophomore, from Chambersburg, PA; Sam Koebley, also a sophomore, from Hudson, OH and Brad Wills, a senior from Snellville, GA. Although it would be imprudent to throw down the gauntlet to our opponents – Look Out! The Haze has some serious talent just waiting to show our opponents the way out of the Championship!

Old Boys Take A Licking

With many Old Boys failing to show, and several who did preferring imbibing as opposed to playing and supporting the cause, the Sewanee Old Boys lost to the Purple Haze 56 – 7 in the Homecoming rugby match. If it hadn’t been for the valiant effort of the five (you read that right – 5) Old Boys who did play with a major effort from the Sewanee rookies who stepped in to help save face, the score would have been even greater.

Alumni Sam Parrish, Austin Brunhober, Alex Garalla, Chris Ridley and Honky McCord did their best to make a game of it. Honky played for Nashville Men earlier and made a mad dash to the Mountain to play in the last 30 minutes of the match.

So the score goes down in the record book and the Haze can enjoy, at least for a year, sweet revenge for the defeat last year.

Sewanee Players Coffey and Utermohlen Drafted to Mid South Collegiate All Stars

Lawrence Coffey, scum half, and Eric Utermohlen, hooker, have been selected to play for the Mid South Collegiate All Stars in the USA Rugby South Union Championships, slated for November 1 in Greenville, SC.

For the first time in Sewanee Rugby history, the Haze has had two players selected for the prestigious South All Star Championships. Lawrence (we call him Dirty Larry) and Eric (Eric the Ute) will get to play alongside Division 1 big-time players from Tennessee (ranked 12) and Arkansas State (ranked 8). The Mid South is current South All Star Champions and favorites to take the title again, so there can be no doubt as to the enormity and prestige associated with their selection. Additionally, the Union All Stars Championship is a pathway for selection to the USA Rugby South All Stars whose coaches, plus the South All American selector, will be in attendance at the tournament. Well done, Larry and Eric!
