The Carman Beavers were keeping their eyes on the prize after a disappointing end to last year's first place hopes. While they remained near the top of the standings for most of last season, player injuries made a difference when it came to their semi final best of seven vs Portage who eliminated them. Come October GM Owen welcomed back pretty much the entire previous squad including star players Lewadnuik, Christie and Bestland but minus sniper Mark Owen.New faces who would make an impact were new import former Maroon D Dale Butland and a new Coach in Brett Dow.
They came out of the gate with 2 wins but soon found themselves in last place by end of December! With a New Year came a new team winning enough games to climb out of the basement led by Lewy and Laurent Benjamin's point terrors while Christie and his D were very solid. By regular season end, Lewy was tied with Notre Dame's import for the scoring title with 42 points ( his 4th claim to that title ) and joined Benji and Christie on the All Star teams.
Although the team struggled due to player injuries and absences in the first part of the season, the Beavers managed to head into playoffs in a respectable 4th with a 10-9-0-1 record ( 1 point out of 3rd ). They defeated the 5th place Portage squad in 3 games in the first round then wrapped up their semi final series against Warren 4 games to 2. The SEMHL finals would be Carman versus Altona in a best of seven!
The Maroons ranked 2nd to last place during the season but desposed of Morden and first palce Notre Dame to reach this showdown. The top eight playoff scoring leaders were from these two teams with Lewy sitting at 21 to lead. Christie was ranked #1 in GAA with 2.15 and save % of .928. The last time Carman won was 2016 while Altona earned back to back in 2012 and 2013. The winner will attend the Senior A Provnincials in Winnipeg to compete for the Manitoba Cup!
The Beavers swept away the competition beating Altona 4 straight to claim the SEMHL title. The first 3 games were won without much trouble but the 4th needed 3rd period scoring for a 2-0 victory. Lewy was named Playoff MVP ( also in 2016 ) with 27 points in 13 games and Brock Vanderveen had an excellent playoff with 16 points good enough for 3rd place. Steve was 11-1-1 with a GAA of 1.88 and a .935 SP too!! They now head into Wpg to face the the other Senior Champion teams in April.
They got all the way to the Senior A final but were felled by the St Anne Aces. To get to that game they defeated Grandview 8-4 with Benji and Lewy each recording hat tricks. In the final vs St Anne, the Beavers pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but to no avail and a 5-3 finish ans 2nd in Manitoba.
A windup was held at Scotswood Links in Elm Creek with golf and supper. Please see the Awards section for more info.
