November 19, 2009: An unidentified health worker in Alberta, Canada lost his job when he provided exclusive access to the vaccine for the H1N1 virus to Calgary Flames players and player family members the day before the Province closed public clinics due to a shortage of the vaccine. Alberta is planning to restart the vaccine program for at risk populations, which apparently NHL hockey players are not. November 16, 2009: As if maneuvering a small rubber puck with a stick on a sheet of ice while wearing thin blades of steel isn't hard enough, the game of "Unicycle Hockey" has been played for 25 years in America, Europe and Asia. While riding unicycles, players move a small ball towards a net with plastic hockey sticks. Both feet must be on the unicycle's pedals in order to score a goal. November 13, 2009: A Boise, Idaho city hockey rink temporarily banned the Idaho Junior Steelheads after the team engaged in a game of "strip hockey." During a practice drill on October 21, 2009, players were to remove a piece of equipment if they missed a shot. Things got out of hand to the point where a 17-year-old skated in the "full Monty." Police are continuing an investigation to determine if anyone violated Boise's public indecency ordinance. November 9, 2009: During the 2008 elections, GOP Vice Presidential nominee and self-styled "hockey mom", Sarah Palin, dropped the opening puck at a few NHL games. St. Louis Blues goalie, Manny Legace, injured his hip at one of these events when he tripped on the red carpet brought out onto the ice for Governor Palin. There's no word about who Manny voted for in the 2008 Presidential election. November 6, 2009: Hall of Fame goalie, Jacques Plante, once made this comment about being an NHL goalie: "How would you like a job where every time you make a mistake, a big red light goes on and 18,000 people boo?"

LATEST NEWS
WINTER SPORTS PARENT MEETING MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23 The Berkley High School Athletic Department is hosting a mandatory parents' meeting for those who have athletes competing in winter sports, like hockey. The meeting is Monday, November 23 at 7:00PM at the BHS Auditorium. SEASON BEGINS The Berkley High School Hockey Varsity Hockey Team season has begun. Some news to get things rolling. First, the Bears blew open a close game in the third and beat Warren Mott 5-1 in its opening scrimmage. Next, team pictures will be taken on November 22. Coach Fleming has asked that all players be dressed and ready for pictures at 4:15 PM. Also, while Coach Fleming has most of everyone's contact infomation, he would like everyone to email family contact information to him at his email address (click on the preceding link). In addition, Coach Fleming is in the need for a Team Manager. With the retirement of Mark Schmeling, someone will need to step up to fill that void. Please contact Coach Fleming and help out the Team. Otherwise, we will be forced to put everyone's name in a hat and the name that will be drawn will be the new Team Manager! In all seriousness, this is an important position and one that can really help in making this a successful season. Finally, Sue Dunham is collecting parent volunteers to host post-practice dinners, continuing this fine tradition. Some Sundays are still open, so open up your home to our fine young men. We will be adding the dates and locations of team dinners to our calendar. FOLLOW BERKLEY HOCKEY AT MLIVE.COM MLive.com is beginning an experiment this winter by having volunteers become embedded journalists for high school sports teams. Its goal is to have a person report on every game for every sports team in Michigan. Follow Berkley High School Varsity Hockey on MLive.com.
