The Jayhawks finished a great season ranked #13 in the country. The Hawks hovered just barely outside of the Top 20 all season long, and finally broke through after a strong performance during the Mid-America Regional Tournament. KU opened its first game of Regionals against eventual national champion Colorado State. The Hawks were paced by Nolan Mansfield on the mound, who kept CSU's high-powered offense in check giving up only 3 runs on 5 hits. Upon losing their first game, the Hawks were paired in the elimination game against the Missouri Tigers. The Jayhawks took care of the Tigers 9-6 after a complete game performance by Sam Zerger, who put out his best outing of the year. The victory over Mizzou was KU's fourth of the season over the Tigers. KU then moved on to play Iowa in another elimination game. Dominating from start to finish, the 7-3 victory advanced the Hawk into a championship game re-match against CSU. Playing before a tremendous Mother's Day crowd, the Jayhawks gave the Rams all they could handle. Freshman pitcher Jon Brogan made his first start of the season and threw a gem. The Hawks' offense, however, just could not break through, while the Rams managed to scratch out 4 runs. With one out in the top of the 7th, though, the Hawks staged a rally. After a single, an error, and a walk, the Hawks had the bases loaded for All-American Mark Hays. Hays blasted a fastball over the left-centerfield fence, tying the game at 4 and sending the Crimson & Blue faithful into hysteria. Alas, the Hawks were unable to ride the momentum to victory and lost on a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th, sending CSU to their 6th World Series appearance in a row. The Jayhawks finished their historic season ranked #13 (19-6), their highest ranking in program history.

KU hosted the University of Missouri Tigers for a 3-game series April 24-26, the winner of which would emerge as Mid-America South Conference champions. Rain moved the series to Topeka, KS & shortened it to a double-header on Sunday. Mizzou swept the 2-game series from the Jayhawks (4-3, 10-4) moving into 1st place in the MSC and assuring themselves of a bid to the Mid-America Regional Tournament in Topeka, KS May 8-10.

Hoping for the at-large bid to the Regional tournament, the Hawks had to win out their final conference games (1 apiece against KU JV and Mizzou). This past Saturday at the Lake Shawnee Baseball Complex, site of this year's Regionals, KU came out to play a triple-header (1 against KU JV, 2 against Mizzou). By going 3-0 on the day, the Jayhawks finished the regular season with an overall record of 17-4 and a conference record of 10-2.

By finishing 2nd in the MSC and going 1-2 against conference champion Mizzou, the Hawks hope to be invited to Regionals as the at-large seed. Regionals are comprised of the 3 conference champions from the Mid-America North, South, and West conferences plus a wild card team. The at-large seed is determined by the NCBA based primarily on each 2nd place team's conference record against the conference champion. Thus far, Mizzou has clinched the MSC title and Colorado State has clinched the MWC title.

After winning out, all the Hawks can do now is watch what happens in the North. On the season KU is 4-0 against the MNC, posting 42 runs in a 4-game sweep of the University of South Dakota Coyotes earlier in the spring. USD is currently playing this weekend for second place in the North against Northern Iowa, while the University of Iowa and Iowa State play for the conference title. Both series are currently split at 1 game apiece, with today's action determining not only the fate of the MNC, but that of KU's postseason hopes. Keep checking for updated news on the Jayhawks bid for a return to the Mid-American Regionals.
