As this baseball organization has existed, perennially, we have always been underdogs. There has always been someone out there with more tools, better talent, better hitters, and better pitching; this year is no different. In the three years that I have managed this team (spanning 5 seasons) I have never come across a group of more resilient men. We have no business being undefeated, having outscored our opponents by greater than a 2 to 1 margin, with a washed up high school pitcher who struggles to keep it above 60 as their ace, and a rag tag group of men thrown together in a rebuilding experiment that has paid dividends thus far. Yet we emerge untainted, looking downward upon the hodgepodge of fallen teams left in our wake.
There is a team out there who desires our failure. They have circled us on the calendar as a date with which they will attempt to rip out our hearts. Maybe we are overmatched, maybe they have better tools, maybe they have more weapons, maybe they have better pitching…..maybe we will lose…that does not change the fact that they have to stand in front of us as men and here are declarations of who we are. On that Day, November 22, 2010 we will declare “We Are”, and it will either be good enough….or not. But they will not walk away unscathed….we will leave our mark, and we will not walk off the field empty handed. We will walk away with a piece of their heart…..and quite possibly the victory will be in tow.
