EAST COBB TROJANS GET ZAPPED BY THE LIGHTNING
The visiting East Cobb Trojans drew first blood with a hit by lead off batter Kyle Stanley, who was brought home by Brady Souther's swinging bunt and good base running. Michael Ward reached second on a hard hit double and Matt Swanson drew a walk, but the Trojans were unable to convert any more runs. Coach Gregory gave the ball to Big Matthew Scott for the start, but nice hitting by the East Cobb Lightning and some botched plays in the field left the Trojans down 4-1 after one inning. With a two out rally started by Mark Ankerholz and Cameron Gregory, the Trojans were again kept off the board by a fine fielding play by the Lightning's pitcher that ended the rally.
The Lightning came back up in the second inning and picked up three more runs on a nice triple from their clean-up batter. Brady Souther took the ball as reliever and pitched a scoreless third inning. Leading off the fourth inning was Matt "On Base Machine" Swanson who drew a walk, followed by Tyler Heinrichs who ripped a shot to right center which was caught on a great play by the Lightning centerfielder, saving extra bases. Kyle Garrard, the Trojans' backstop-like catcher, ripped a single and was able to advance the runner for Taylor Giles, who hit a run scoring single to chip slightly into the lead and go to 7-2. But the story of the day was the Trojans' inability to pick up runs with runners in scoring position.
Michael Ward was handed the ball to pitch in the fourth inning, but the Lightning continued to ring up the Trojans' pitching and took an 11-2 lead into the fifth inning. Kyle Stanley smacked a double and was brought home on a sacrifice by Brady Souther to get one run back but not enough to save the day. The Trojans take a loss in the top bracket and exit the tournament.
Better luck next time.
GO TROJANS!!!!!!!
THE EAST COBB TROJANS SOAR OVER THE SCRA EAGLES WITH A 9-0 SHUTOUT VICTORY
On a beautiful late Fall day the East Cobb Trojans began their day in the USTBA Fall State Championship with starting pitcher Matt Swanson taking the mound. Matt delivered a 1-2-3 inning with nice pitching and good help in the field. Matt pitched three scoreless innings in front of the solid Trojans defense. The whole Trojan batting order delivered with good hitting in the first three innings, with great hits by Kyle Stanley, Brady Souther and a two run blast by Eddie Hernandez - we think it landed in Tennessee - in the third, giving the boys a 7-0 lead, increased by another run on hard baserunning by Devin McCleskey.
Going into the fourth inning with an 8-0 lead, Coach Gregory handed the ball to Taylor Giles to take over. Good pitching and a sweet 6-4-3 double play by Kyle Stanley, Cameron Gregory and saved by Eddie's stretching grab at first, kept the Eagles off the board going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Tyler Heinrichs led off for the Trojans in the bottom of the fourth inning and bombed a shot way over the center field fence taking the lead to 9-0. Michael Ward, backed by another very well-turned 6-4-3 double play by Marky Mark Ankerholz, Kyle Stanley and Brady Souther, finished out the shutout victory for the Trojans.
EAST COBB TROJANS GO DOWN 4-0 TO THE MILL CREEK HAWKS
Eddie Hernandez brought the heat to the Mill Creek Hawks as the Trojans starting pitcher for game two. Scoring one run on a passed ball, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first and retired the Trojans' lead off batters in order. The Hawks took advantage of a nice double and a passed ball to score another run to go to 2-0 after one and a half innings. The Trojans managed to load the bases on a nice hit by Eddie, a blooper by Matthew Scott and a bruising hit-by-pitch of Matt Swanson. This brought hard hitting Tyler Heinrichs up with two outs, but a tough rundown at third ended the Trojans' inning before Tyler could complete his at-bat. Coming up in the bottom of the third Tyler hit a single to lead off, but in the fourth baserunning oddity for the game, he was hit by Kyle Garrard's base hit and was out by rule for the first out of the inning. The Trojans again could not put up a run despite having baserunners in scoring position, and went into the fourth inning down 2-0 in a very well-pitched game by both teams.
Eddie mowed down the Hawks batters in the top of the fourth and Brady Souther drew a walk to draw first blood in the bottom of the fourth. Again, with runners on second and third, the Trojans came up short. Reliever Devin McCleskey took the ball and, a strikeout and two nice plays by Kyle Stanley at shortstop later, took down the Hawks in order to keep the score of this tight game at 2-0. D-Train McCleskey kept the Hawks off the board with the Trojans up to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective) the boys went down in order which allowed enough time for a final seventh inning to be played. The Hawks managed to pick up two runs on a nice triple by their shortstop and handed the Trojans a 4-0 deficit coming up in the bottom of the final inning. The Trojans bats were unable to bridge the gap and the boys took their first loss in a very close game against a very solid team.
GO TROJANS!!!!!!!
