Little Hawks Basketball Club
2011-2012 Season

Club Information

Dear Parents and Players,

The Little Hawks Basketball Club, LHBC, is in its third year. Our mission is to improve upon the boys basketball program at Iowa City High. Our vision for the program is to improve the skills of our players while gaining valuable experience both on and off the court. The program places Eastside Elementary and Junior High players on teams of similar skill level. The objective is to get these players playing together, not just limiting them to the school they attend but a cross section from all schools on the Eastside. The future Freshman, Sophomore and Varsity Basketball teams at City will be filled with ex-LHBC players who honed their skills during their time in our club.

This letter will give you a little information about what we do and how we do it. LHBC is a parent run program which will continue to exist through the efforts of everyone involved.

·         LHBC Organization

The success of this program depends on the parents and their willingness to help wherever there is a need.

Program Director - Bob Cotton

Program Manager - Jeremy Wells

Treasurer - Steve Young

Secretary - Julie Cotton

Uniform/Equipment coordinator - Joey Young

·         Fees

Fees are $200 for 3rd/4th grade, $225 for 5th/6th and $250 for 7th/8th. This fee includes league and tournament entry fees.

Uniforms and/or replacement orders of uniforms will be an additional cost of up to $55.

·         Practices

Practices are held on Sundays from 10-3 at City High. This schedule may be adjusted based on the number of teams.

Additional practices may also be held on a weeknight. Each team and coach will make those determinations on a team by team basis.

·         Season

Typically our season runs from the end of September to March, each team along with their coaches determines the length of their season. All league play begins in late October and is divided into two sessions, one session ends before Christmas and the other begins again in January. Teams will play in the North Dodge league in Iowa City or North Liberty Rec. Center League. Teams play one game a week in their league.

·         Tournaments

We will place teams in 2-5 tournaments a year. This number is determined by the parents and coaches of each individual team with regard to that team’s skill level and availability. Some tournaments are highly competitive and not suited for all teams. Conversely, some tournaments would not be challenging to some teams. Most tournaments are in Eastern Iowa (CR, Quad Cities, Mid-Prairie) but some teams may travel to Des Moines and other locations of longer distances.

·         Coaches

The Program Director will assign all coaches. Supervision of coaches is the responsibility of the LHBC Board members. Instruction is given to all coaches as to the City High philosophy but each is free to coach as they see fit for their team.

If we do not have a volunteer coach for 3rd-6th we will not be able to field a team for that group. Any parent interested in coaching should contact Bob Cotton (littlehawksbball@yahoo.com ) for more information.

·         Tryouts

Tryouts will be held August 7, 2011 2:00-3:30 3rd-5th grade and 3:30-5:00 6th-8th grade - ALL at City High boys must register before tryouts begin so please arrive a little early. August 14, 2011 for all grades - 3:30-5:00 at City High - will be the make-up date for those that can't make the main try-out. The session will work much like a practice and will be run by current and prospective coaches, which will evaluate the players.

The 3rd-5th grade teams will be balanced teams with the LHBC players from the previous year retaining a spot on a team. All new players will be put on a waiting list, if there are enough players to make a new team and a coach, a new team will be created. Boys are placed on teams based on their abilities and then placed in leagues and tournaments so they can have the best opportunity for success and to improve their skills.

The 6th-8th grade teams will be competitive teams and the previous LHBC players will not be guaranteed a spot on a team. The teams will be assigned a specific amount of players depending on the numbers and their similar ability levels. There is no guarantee that each boy will be placed on a team.

You will be contacted by Sept. 1 with regard to your placement or team/coach information.
