Offense Shines in D1 Victory over Sled DogsTeam Avoids Another Third Period Let Down After Dominating Most of the Game
The Maroons D-1 Offense showed up for the game last Sunday night against the Sled Dogs at Richfield. Spotting the Maroons to a 4-0 lead going into the third, were two goals by Pete "Where Ya Been?" Hyman, Mark "Flew the Koop" Kupferschmidt, and once again a goal by D-1 eval pickup Tom "The Spear" Lantz. The game was evenly paced with the Maroons D shutting down most of the serious threats that the Sled Dogs were able to muster, while the Maroons "O" put a season-to-date high of 39 shots on the beleaguered Sled Dogs goalie.
Among the hard working Maroons D on the night were Dave "Ice Cream" Kohn, Rich "Captain Kirk" Kurkowski, and Joe "Yo" Gehrts, to name a few of the star D that kept the 'Dogs 33 shots to mostly bad angles and sleepers.
Oh but wait. We KNOW that since we all paid to play, we MUST get our money's worth so the third period once again proved more interesting than we would all care to admit. The Sled dogs came out working hard against a worn down Maroons "D" and yup, before long, it was 4-2 Sled Dogs. And just to make it that much more interesting, the 'Dogs were able to slip one more past Maroon's goalie Baird in an "excuse me/whoops/put down the Sunday Paper/Hockey News Digest and concentrate on the game" moment when a rising shot bounced off Baird's glove and into the net to make it 4-3 Sled Dogs with 2:20 to go.
However, thank goodness D-1 teams pull their goalies. Son of Goalie Andy Baird helped Dad recover from that gaffe by putting a shot in the open net to slam the door shut with a 5-3 win for the Maroons, and that's how the game ended.
Getting assists on the night were #5 Mike "The Streak" Stephens, #25 Dan "Badloss" Goodwin, #1 Captain Tom "Bobby" Hebert, and never one to stay out of the points spot light, #8 Matt "Seig Heil!" Heilicher.
Way to go Maroons D1!
D2 Team Loses Another 3-1 Game, This Time to Puckhounds The Maroons D-2 team lost 3 - 1 to the Puckhounds in another frustrating game at New Hope Ice Arena last Saturday night. Again, unable to muster much in the way of effective breakouts, the Maroons were only able to put 13 shots on goal. The hard working Jonathon "Mr. Coffee:" Filter took 33 in another top shelf (pardon the pun) performance in net.
The one goal for the Maroons was accomplished by the hard working center for the Maroons, eval-find David "Green" Breen
The game was 2 - 1 until the final minutes when the Puckhounds scored on a power play after the disciplined Maroons team took their only penalty of the night.
The D-2 Maroons next opponent are the Northern Hordes. The Maroons are the home team so it's white jerseys.
