Maroons Goalie Tim Baird corners a Diablo Shot

Maroons D1 Sneak Past Diablos in 5-4 Thriller

The Maroons D-1 started out their 2009 home opener against the Diablos the way too many of their games started going back to summer '09 play.  Spotting the Diablos a 2-0 lead at the end of period 1, it looked like the team was in for another long night at the ice arena. But the Maroons offense, mostly quiet against the Piranhas the week before, showed a little life when #25 Dan Goodwin finally put in goal #1 for the Maroons mid way into the second.  And fortunately, it would not be his last.  Following up Goodwin's goal was one from Captain Hebert less than two minutes later. For a moment, it was two-all, and hopes were running high.

Then it was back to reality, or at least, the former reality. The Diablos pounded back with two more unanswered goals to make it 4 - 2 Diablos at one point in the third period. But not so fast said Heilicher (3 points on the night) and Dan Goodwin, who put in one more each to tie it at 4-4.  Then it was Joel "Poetry In Motion" Ginsberg's turn, putting in the GWG at 4:24. The Maroons survived a furious 3rd period onslaught by the Diablos (almost half of their 31 shots were taken in the third period) as the Maroons D and Goalie Baird kept the doors closed to skate off with a 5 - 4 win.

"We didn't put enough shots on goal but we made them count when we did" mentioned new Maroons power forward Dan Goodwin, referring to the 17 shots on goal for the Maroons.  "This was a fun game all the way" offered up Captain Hebert. "We look forward to more of the same".  The Maroons next opponent are the notorious Wingmen (not really sure why they are notorious but it DOES sound cool to say that) at Breck, on Sunday, November 8th, 7:45pm.  The Maroons are the away team so it's dark jerseys, gang.

D2 Maroons Get Shot Down By Fighting Loons In Season Opener
It was opening night at Highland Arena in St. Paul Sunday night as the new look 2009/2010 D2 Maroons lost a close one 4-3.

The opening night roster looked a lot different from the Maroons that finished 3rd in the AHA last season and this season looks to be a rebuilding year as General Manager Tom Heberts Maroons had nine new players on their opening night roster including veteran free agent signings Chris Jacobs and Dan Carter of the Arctic Wolves.

Two veterans scratched from Sunday nights line-up were enforcer Rich Fromstein and the always physical Jonathan Fogel. All GM Hebert would say regarding the game time decisions was that it was due to conduct detrimental to the team and that we deal with player issues in-house.

Sunday nights game saw the Maroons out shoot the Fighting Loons 35 to 28, but still come up short in the loss for the visitors. Scoring goals for the Maroons were Jim Prince, Rich Kurkoski and Bob Jensen. Rookie goalie sensation Jonathan Filter had an outstanding game turning away a few breakaways and coming away with 31 saves.

The Maroons next game and home opener is November 7th at Biff Adams Arena vs. the always tough Chaos.

Marooons Field D1 and D2 Teams for 2009/2010 Season
The Maroons will be fielding two teams again in the 2009/2010 season, this time a D-2 team and a D-1 team. "With the disbanding of the Maroons C-1 team, this gave us the opportunity to put several of our vets on the D-1 team.  At the same time, we still have a strong core D-2 team that will be competitive and provide talent to future Maroon D-1 teams.  Clearly all part of my master plan" offered up Captain Thomas Hebert.

The Maroons also have several returning vets to the D-2 team in the likes of Fromstein, Fogel, Kurkoski, Jensen, Nelson, and Kalb, to name a few.  Rounding out the  roster are several new pickups from evals.  Jonathon Filter is the new net minder for the D-2 team.

For the Maroons D-1 team, new pickups inlcude Steve Finkelstein and Dan Goodwin from the Maroons summer team (Gnats).  Finkelstein and Goodwin were points leaders for the Gnats and are terrific additions to the core Maroons D-1 team. Joining the Maroons from the Wildcats include Mark "Koop" Kupferschmidt, Andy Baird, Joe Gehrts, Sapa Carlson, and Tim Baird who will be tending nets for the D-1 team.  Returning Maroon vets include Cap. Hebert, Dana Theide, Dave Kohn, Mark Schaenzer, Dave Klaiman, and Mike Mortenson.  Eval pics include Tom Lanz and Andy Abraham.  "It's shaping up to be a solid team and I look forward to seeing the product on the ice" offered up Cap. Hebert.
