Something To Consider

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Nazareth Advances to the Semis

October 30, 2009

For some, déjà vu creates an eerie, uncomfortable sensation. Bill McKee’s Nazareth Lasers have no problem with the overwhelming sense of familiarity created by recurring events.

On Friday, the Lasers met an undefeated Bloomfield Bombers team in the post-season for the second year in a row. Like last year, the Lasers advanced in the playoffs.

Anna Brado and Emily Kelly scored second half goals, and Nazareth downed Bloomfield, 2-0 in Section Five Class CC quarter-final action.

After the two teams played an end-to-end first half, the Lasers took charge. The Blue and Gold virtually kept the ball in the Bloomfield end of the field for the first 25 minutes of the second stanza.

Kelly broke into the open with a pair of opportunities. The senior sent one shot just wide of frame. Later, she hit the left post. Janine Swanson took a quick shot from forty yards away that nearly beat the Bomber net-minder, Alyssa Sackett.

After relentless pressure, the Lasers broke through in the game’s 59th minute. Swanson took a throw in from the right side of the pitch that Lauren Kelly flicked with her head toward the front of the Bloomfield goal. The ball caromed off a player toward the right end line where Biannca Bullard alertly retrieved it for a cross to Brado for the eventual game-winner.

The Blue and Gold did not stop there. Six minutes later Swanson won a 50-50 ball in the midfield and found Bullard open fifteen yards ahead. The senior forward turned and led Kelly into the open. After touching the ball past Sackett, Kelly found the back of the net and the two-goal advantage.

Nazareth’s defense suffocated Bloomfield for most of the second half. Melissa Ercoli, Haley Swanson, Maggie Bates, and Lauren Kelly limited Bloomfield’s chances. Megan Kane made five saves for the shutout - none bigger than a point blank stop with five minutes remaining. Bloomfield took advantage of corner kick opportunity and found a player open in front of the net. Nazareth’s senior keeper was up to the task.

Nazareth moves on to the semi-finals to face Alexander. Naz fell to the Trojans, 5-0 in the 2007 sectionals.

Nazareth and Bloomfield shared the 2008 Class CC crown. The Lasers advanced on penalty kicks to the New York State qualifier.
