New York Storm 2009

Storm Split Doubleheader with Brooklyn Rays

4/22/09 - The New York Storm split their second doubleheader of the season, and their first on their home field at Long Island City High School, with the Brooklyn Rays. In the first game, the Storm seemed as if it had not yet adjusted to the field at LIC HS, as mistakes plagued the team for much of the game, allowing the Rays to piece together 9 runs without a hit. The Storm managed to scrape together 4 runs, including a 2-run double off the RF fence for Nestor Sanchez. The Rays took Game 1, 9-4.

In game 2, the offense came together, once again led by Sanchez who targeted the RF wall once again. This time he sent one over the fence, traveling an estimated 275 feet. Robert Checo and Johann Santana provided multiple hit and RBI games from the top of the lineup. But the game ball in this one went to SP Cesar Gomez, who gave the Storm 5 solid innings when they needed it most, striking out 8. Things got a bit dicey in the bottom of the 6th but Rob Akleh was able to stave off the Rays efforts at a comeback. The Storm took Game 2, 11-9.

Action continues for the Storm Sunday 4/26 at 9:30AM with a doubleheader against the NY Pirates.

02/01/09 Contrary to some inaccurate hearsay from players and managers across the league, the New York Storm is and always was returning for their third season in the NYCMBL. After a disappointing 1st round Playoff exit in 2008, the Storm has their eyes set on returning to the Postseason and making their mark in 2009.

The biggest off-season addition for the Storm will come in the dugout: The Storm is excited to play this year under new Manager Elvis Estevez. Elvis has a strong Coaching resume under his belt and will bring experience and an air of confidence to the Storm. Former Manager Anthony Pardo has stepped down from the Manager’s role in order to assume a player/coach/GM roll in 2009. “I’m excited to bring Elvis aboard for the 2009 season” Pardo said. “Elvis will bring a lot of things to the table that will help the Storm grow over the course of the season and hopefully into the Postseason. His approach is traditional, emphasizing defense and pitching as the means to win and also having fun while playing the right way.”

The Storm have moved on from some of their 2008 players in hopes of improving the product on and off the field. Returning faces from the 2008 roster will include: Pardo, Sami and Rob Akleh, Rob Wolf, Cesar Gomez, Adam Greenfield, Joel Morales, Nestor Sanchez, Mike Mercieca, Johann Santana and staff ace Brian Thompson. While the 11 core players of the roster returns, the Storm will also be welcoming in new faces in the coming weeks ahead and expect their 2009 roster to be deep with talent and depth at every position.

Updates regarding the exhibition season and new player additions will be forth coming soon. Please visit our site again in the coming weeks. 2009 New York Storm- The Re-Up
