Rebels take game 1 of series vs. The Giants, second game suspended; await midweek faceoff against SkyscrapersThe New York Rebels took game one of the doubleheader against the Giants 8-5, behind a strong performance by Wilfredo "June" De La Cruz, who pitched a complete game and notched the win. The Rebels showed patience at the plate, and showed an aggression on the basepads that they didnt show in the past. Manager Felix Palao was quoted as saying that " I felt that this was a total team effort, and everyone played their part. This is how we need to play from here on out". The Rebels featured a strong defensive outing throughout, and were focused on the W. The second game featured a final performance by Johnny Arias, who went 4 innings and gave up 4 runs. The Rebels staged a comeback in the 5th inning, as they loaded the bases with Elvin Ayala at bat. Mother Nature decided that enough was enough, and the skies proceeded to open up, causing the game to be suspended. Game 2 was also marred by an extremely bad call by the home plate umpire, as Ryan Bohn hit a ball that reached the wall at Old Boys HS, one that was clearly foul that was called for a fair ball, resulting in a run. Palao is also quoted as saying that " Not taking away from Bohn because he is a tremendous hitter and does what he can, but I felt that the umpire blew that call big time and I felt that I had a good reason to argue that call. At that point I really didnt care if I got ran from the game, you really cant blow calls like that. Blue made the call before the ball landed, and that caused him to make the wrong call. I understand that this is a weekend league, but honestly, we pay the blues every weekend, and these guys are professionals. We come out of our pockets every week to pay these guys, and we expect them to get the call right. A call like that is a smack in the face to the game and really makes the profession of umpiring look really bad". The Rebels face off against the Skyscrapers at Roberto Clemente State Park on Tuesday, June 30th, first pitch at 7:30. Players are expected to report an hour before game time for warmups and stretching. |
