PCBL-OC Adds Boysen Park To Our Site List For 2012
Anaheim - With the co-operation of the City of Anaheim, we have been able to secure Boysen Park for the AAA/AA Division teams during the 2012 season. For those that were unaware of Boysen Park's existence, it has historical significance to both baseball as a location used for many high school games over the decades, but it is also named for the inventor of the boysenberry - Rudolph Boysen.
In the late 1920s, the USDA began tracking down reports of a large, reddish-purple berry that had been grown on the northern California farm of a man named Rudolph Boysen. Boysen was the City of Anaheim's Park Superintendent and a horticulturist. The USDA's George Darrow enlisted the help of Walther Knott, a Southern California farmer who was known as a berry expert.
Knott had never heard of the new berry, but he agreed to help Darrow in his search. Darrow and Knott learned that Boysen had abandoned his growing experiments several years earlier and sold his farm. The timeline is believed to be approximately 1923 or so.
Undaunted by this news, Darrow and Knott headed out to Boysen's old farm, on which they found several frail vines surviving in a field choked with weeds. They transplanted the vines to Knott's farm in Buena Park, California where he nurtured them back to fruit-bearing health. Walter Knott was the first to commercially cultivate the boysenberry in southern California.
Knott began selling the berries at his farm stand in 1932 and soon noticed that people kept returning to buy the large, tasty berries. When asked what they were called, Knott said, "Boysenberries," after their originator. Knott's small family restaurant and pie business eventually grew into Knott's Berry Farm.
As the boysenberry's popularity grew, Mrs. Knott began making preserves, which ultimately made Knott's Berry Farm famous and very successful. Rudolph Boysen relocated to downtown Amaheim and his former home stil stands today.
When you first arrive at Boysen Park, you are taken by the bush-covered fencelines that encompass the entire ballpark, you notice the stands, the lights, the field conditions and especially the dimensions. The ballpark surpasses the MLB parks in foul line depth, has 396ft power alleys, and has a 400ft center field with a 10-12ft fenceline.
This facility is easily the "crown-jewel" of the PCBL-OC for this year. We hope that most of the clubs in the upper divisions will have the opportunity to play at least one game in the grand-daddy of all PCBL-OC facilities.
The park itself has well manicured lawns, plenty of shade trees and a generally pleasant layout for a Sunday ballgame experience. Hope to see you all there at some point in the season.
We have enough places that we have solid relationships with that we will not have to be too concerned about not having enough fields to get our season in. We have several "aces in the hole" and the league administration is constantly reaching out to find additional facilities, if needed.
Continuing Improvements For PCBL-OC
Anaheim - As PCBL-OC now has two facilities where the dugouts are nothing more than chainlink fencing, we now have shade covers for the dugouts that will be utilized starting 15 April. We will erect and take down these covers after each week to be sure that they are cared for and not destroyed or vandalized.
Cypress - We had had several inquiries about the possibility of adding additional teams to the league while the season is in progress. We will certainly add clubs as long as the division integrity is maintained. (That means that each division has to retain an even number of clubs) We could be adding clubs to AAA and AA in the coming weeks. Be prepared for field additions/subtractions and schedule changes as clubs come aboard.
Administrator's Comments
We got part of Week 4 in the books before the rains came... We are trying to get some weeknight slots from City of Anaheim to make up those rainouts... Will let you all know as soon as we do.
We currently have some Friday game slots that have been given to us by City of Anaheim in order for us to make up rainouts. Now i realize there are some clubs that will have trouble fielding a team... and if you're club is in that situation - DON'T PANIC...!!! We will still be scheduling some Sunday double headers to try to accomodate your player situations. We will need MAXIMUM flexibility in order to get rainouts rescheduled.
It is our intent to leave the balance of the schedule intact and work the make up games into the schedule as fields and times allow. We have one extra time slot per weekend... be prepared to play a game and then MOVE to another location to play a second game until the rainouts are made up.
We are rescheduling as we write this... please check the schedule regularly.
