Q. My player was sent off the ice (to his bench) because the zipper on the inseam of his pants was not fully zippered. Is this a new rule?
A. During the rule change process this past summer the USA Hockey Board of Directors approved a change to Rule 304e which now states that all required and recommended equipment shall be worn in the manner for which it is designed.
This means all pants equipped with zippers for easy removal over skates must be zipped up before the player is allowed to participate in play. The rule was changed in the interest of player safety (particularly the femoral artery). If a players zippers break, they may use duct tape or some simila r product to secure the hole.
The fact that the pants were designed with zippers does not mean wearing them with the zippers open complies with the rule. Any equipment manufacturer you would speak with will tell you that the zippers were installed to ease removal of the pants and not to enhance mobility.
