Season Ends for St. Tim's Big Red Eliminated in 3 Games
2009 was another good season for St. Timothy's Red softball team. For the second straight regular season, the team earned the D Division title and #1 tournament seed with a 17-6 record. Coming into Sunday's tournament, Big Red's record against teams in the tournament was 15-2, and they were undefeated against the teams in their half of the bracket. Their first opponent entered with a 1-22 record. It appeared that they would roll through day 1 of the tournament like last year as well. On Sunday, it quickly became apparent that things wouldn't be so easy for St. Tim's. In the first game, Trinity played some of their best softball of the season, and hung tough with Big Red. After several lead changes, the game came down to the final inning. Trinity took advantage of some walks and a timely single to put up 5 runs and take a 17-14 lead in the top half of the inning. St. Tim's answered in the bottom half when Steve Shea, Stephanie Berdini, and Doc O'Connor all quickly singled to load the bases with no outs, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Paul Hoffman grounded into a fielder's choice and Joe Fairchild followed with a sac fly to bring St. Tim's within one, 17-16. Trinity then walked cleanup hitter Jim Miller, but managed to record the final out before any more runners crossed the plate. Steve Shea led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Eugene Kinjerski doubled in both plate appearances with 2 RBI. Joe Fairchild tripled and drove in 3 runs in the game. Doc O'Connor was 3-for-4.
The loss put St. Tim's Red into the losers bracket to face St. Joseph's. Both teams scored big in the first inning, leaving the score 7-5 in favor of Big Red. The defenses tightened after that, and St. Tim's held on late to win the game 14-10. Schelby Buschman fought off sweaty hands and tough St. Joe's batters to earn the win. Paul Hoffman had a big game at the plate, reaching base all four times up and driving in 3 runs with a bases loaded triple in the 6th inning. Andrew Lebo went 2-for-2. Doc O'Connor walked and scored 3 times. John Code drove in 3 runs.
The win eliminated St. Joseph's and moved St. Tim's Red into another elimination game with division rival New Beginning. Both teams showed off their solid defenses early. New Beginning owned a 1-0 lead as the fourth inning started. In that inning, their offense began to find the holes as they put up 3 more runs to increase the lead. St. Tim's finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning after Eugene Kinjerski tripled and scored immediately on John Code's double, making the score 4-1. After a scoreless fifth inning, New Beginning broke it open in the sixth with four doubles and two singles, plating 5 runs and bringing the score to 9-1. St. Tim's got a couple runs back with two outs in the sixth when Mike Dellamura doubled to knock in Paul Hoffman, then scored on a Kinjerski single. New Beginning tacked on two more in the seventh to reach the final score of 11-3. Schelby Buschman pitched another solid game on the mound, only walking one hitter. Kinjerski and Joe Fairchild each had two hits out of St. Tim's season-low total of 9.
The loss eliminated St. Tim's Red and secured a spot in next week's final tournament day for New Beginning. St. Timothy's Red finished 1-2 for the tournament, tied for fifth place with St. Timothy's White squad. St. Joseph's and Brook Hill each went 0-2 to finish tied for 7th place. FCOB and Seventh Day both went 2-0 and will meet next Sunday in the winners bracket. New Beginning and Trinity are both 2-1 and will meet in an elimination game.
Though the season ended in disappointment for Big Red, there are many accomplishments to celebrate from 2009. The team represented their church well. Friends have been made. A good time was had by all. Hot dog and hamburger companies are still in business thanks to the postgame cookouts. The team brought home another trophy for winning their division...and there is much to look forward to in 2010.
2009 Accomplishments The team and its players had several notable acheivements this season. Two separate six-game win streaks were the longest the team has ever had. Of the 11 doubleheaders played during the year, St. Tim's Red swept 6 of them, split four, and lost only one. Big Red's offense put up 413 runs this season, an all-time best for the team. For the first time ever, they notched over 30 runs in a game. Six times the team had more than 30 hits in a game. Their defense came up big too, holding opponents to 3 runs or less four times this season. The 295 runs allowed is 3 less than last year's previous best of 298.
Several individuals set records this season. Eugene Kinjerski finished the season on a hitting tear, setting a team record for batting average at .758. He also set records for runs (42) and doubles (15). Eugene had 5 hits in a game twice this season and hit for the cycle once. Though nobody on the team cleared the fence this season, John Code set a team mark for homeruns with 13, including 3 in one game. He also set records for triples (7) and RBI (57) in a season. Schelby Buschman lowered his team record for ERA to 10.14 and allowed only 1 run in three separate games. He also set a team mark for strikeouts on the mound with 14. His pitching record over the past two seasons is an outstanding 20-3. Josh DeBruin walked 22 times during the season, helping him reach base 49 times, just behind Kinjerski's 54 and Doc O'Connor's 51.
Rookie Eric Dummann was a big addition to the team, quickly becoming one of the team's top hitters. He finished second on the team with a .673 average and had a streak of 13 consecutive hits in the middle of the season. Another rookie, Scott Shepherd hit nearly .700 and had 4 triples in only 8 games this season. Andrew Lebo put on a hitting show of his own early in the season as his batting average stood above .800 into June. He went 4-for-4 in three separate games, and had a 3-for-3 game as well.
The team's number one fan, Peachie attended every game again this season, extending her streak to 142 straight. She has not missed a game since the team formed five years ago.
Off the field, Kelly and Eric Dummann were married in July. Stephanie (Berdini) Finkenstaedt tied the knot in April. The Miller and Lebo families are expecting additions in the fall.
Congratulations once again for another great season of St. Timothy's softball.

White Team Update St. Timothy's White squad has completed their first ever season with a 8-21 overall record. After finishing 7-19 in the regular season, they entered the postseason tournament as the #6 seed. They fell to FCOB in the first game.
