Hoyt, Piraino on Verge of Championship

9/20

While the club is on vacation this season, two Scorpions are working hard to secure an MABL championship for another team.  The Red Sox of the MABL ran roughshod over the newly revamped National League thanks, in no small part, to the play of their Scorpion rentals; outfielder Matt Hoyt and utility man Jon Piraino.

Leading up to Sunday's semi-final game, Hoyt was hitting .400 with eight runs scored and seven RBI in 11 games while playing solid defense in the outfield and providing the team with its best stolen base threat.  Piraino has also contributed to the Sox success with a .372 batting average, eight RBI and nine runs scored and has been a versital peice of the puzzle on defense, playing five different positions.

This Sunday the Sox will play a double header against the Wolves in what will be a best-of-three series for the league championship.  A double header this week and a potential rubber game next week (if neccessary) will determine the champion.

Piraino is no stranger to the potent Wolves lineup and deep pitching staff.  Last season with the stingers, he piched 8 1/3 innings against the Wolves allowing just three earned runs and six hits.  With the double header format this weekend, the former Scorpion Cy Young Award winner will likely get a chance to toe the rubber in game 2.

Hoyt has been hot as of late, and will likely be the x-factor on the bases this weekend.  With the Wolves solid pitching staff and the Red Sox explosive offense, he could be the determining factor in a championship series.

This Week in Scorpions History

Ben Maggard tossed a complete game gem in the semi-finals vs the Yankees.  The self-proclaimed Pimp Sauce went the distance, giving up three earned runs and striking out five.  Paul Alvarez drove in three and Richard Glavas drove in a pair to help the Scorps reach the finals on their way to the club's only league championship.
