BILLIKENS SWEEP MIZZOU The Saint Louis University hockey team completed a sweep of the University of Missouri Tigers on Saturday with a convincing road win. The Billikens played two of their best games of the season and were rewarded for it. The team suffered a humbling loss at SIUE on Wednesday and looked to regroup against a strong Tigers team that was near the top of the standings in the MACHA.
On Friday night at Webster Groves, the Billikens took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals by senior Justin Petruska both assisted by Andrew Wiltz. Mizzou scored in the last minute of the first period, making it 2-1 going into the intermission. The Tigers scored again early in the second, only to be answered by a SLU goal from Andrew Wiltz assisted by Justin Petruska. The line combination of Petruska, Wiltz, and Tyler Tesson had a great weekend for scoring with a combined 14 points in two games. In the third period, the Billikens took the lead on a Phil Blackwood goal. The Tigers would tie the game at four, but the Billikens took the lead for good on Justin Petruska’s third goal of the game with six minutes left in the game. Johnny Moore would add a goal late in the game and the Billikens were victorious 6-4 in a very hard fought first game of the series. Expectations were high for Saturday night’s game.
The Billikens left campus on Saturday afternoon for the short bus trip to Jefferson City. They were looking for their second win in a row and looked ready to play from the start of the game, something the team has had issues with in the past. On just the third shift of the game, the Billikens took the lead on a goal from Chris Bourget that was the result of a 2 on 1 play entering the offensive zone. Bourget would again find himself on the score sheet after a great assist on Justin Petruska’s fourth goal of the weekend. The Billikens led 2-0 early in the second period. Freshman Wade Booker scored his first goal as a Billiken on a gritty rebound goal. The Tigers ruined the shutout possibility for goalie Trey Spiller as they intercepted a pass and scored. Spiller would not be rattled however, as he did not allow another goal the rest of the evening. The Billikens saw goals from Moore, Tesson, and Wood before the end of the second period and took a commanding 6-1 lead into the third period. In the third, Phil Blackwood scored to make it 7-1 in favor of the Billikens. SLU won the game and enjoyed the ride back to campus knowing they had swept the Tigers for the second straight season. The Billikens appeared to have figured out some of their problems and look to improve during their next series with Eastern Illinois. |
