SEASON PREVIEW: Wolves Open Season on the Road The Varsity Team begins their regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 10th as they travel to Hagerty. The Huskies are in their 2nd year of varsity play and have a group of players that have been together for 5 years. Their familiarity will each other will undoubtedly be an asset to them in their home opener of 2009.
Leading the Wolves in 2009 will be Senior Captain's Ben Nielsen, Sal Coppolino, Kory Lutes, and Clarke Johnson. This veteran group has been with the program since 2007 and has experienced first-hand what it takes to win a District Title and go deep into the Regional Playoffs. Their leadership this year will be a key to the overall success of the team.
The offense will see plenty of contributions from underclassmen Steven Tilmon, Blake Gwizdalski, Kyle Plaugher, Max Bush, & Jake Rooney. With a balanced offense attacking from various areas of the field, it will be difficult for any opponent to focus on any one area or player. Success will be measured not by who scores, but rather how things are done and executed.
The Face Off duties will again rest on the shoulders of Trey Gordon & Ryan Fennell. This duo will provide a variety of challenges for the opposition and will be essential for setting up the offense. Defensive Midfielders Jordan Nesheim & Josh Hopkins will be assisting from the wings to providing ball control and defensive stops in transition.
Defensively, the Wolves return an experienced group backstopped by Goaltender Clarke Johnson. Sam Studstill, Josh King, & Jarrod Kahre will play at Close Defense while Jarrod Lee will see plenty of action at the Long Pole position. Justin Vonsik, Mo El-Menshawi, & Zach Donnangelo will see plenty of action in a variety of roles throughout the year.
The team will look to improve on last years 10-5 overall record & 9-1 in the Metro Conference. Top district opponents will be Winter Park, Boone, & Lake Highland Prep. Other top games will be Bishop Moore, Olympia, Lake Mary, & Oviedo. The regular season will conclude on April 2nd.
The District, Regional, & State Playoffs begin April 7th. Time will tell if this years group has that "something special" to win out in the end!
