Weber State Makes it 7 in a row...

Weber State headed north to play in conference rival Utah State. The Cats had a combination of a slow start and good pitching from USU, but over came both to win the first game 2 - 0 in extra innings. Game two was better for the Cats, it was a close game throughout and came down to the bottom of the 7th. Freshmen center fielder, Landon "The Silent Assassin" Favero saved the game by throwing out the tying run at the plate. So far "The Silent Assassin" has made big defensive plays in just about every game he plays in. The Cats ended up winning game 2 by the score of 5-4. In games 3 and 4 the Cats brought their bats and put up a total of 25 runs in two games. The pitching on Saturday was just as effective as the bats were, as they held USU to a total of 3 runs. All in all the Cats had a great weekend and really came out ready to play. The Wildcats take the field again this weekend with in conference rival Boise State. WSU Has Solid First Weekend...The Weber State Wildcats open up their 2009-2010 season with a 3 games to 1 series win over CNCC. The Cats lost game 1 and then put 3 solid games together to win the series. Game 1- The Cats came out in game one and struggled to get hits, and score runs. Junior Pitcher Kayleb Kester started the first game and had a solid first outing, however the Cats could not bring runners across home plate to help the left handed ace of Weber State. Coach Olsen stated " We had a slow start and that was my fault, we didn't get prepared to play this game. We had some travel issues and that didn't give us enough time to get into a mindset that was ready to play. Having said that, a big reason we didn't have early success in game 1 was because we left so many runners on base. This is expected seeing as it was our first game, but I expect us to figure things out and not struggle with that the rest of the year." The Cats only put up 3 runs in the entire game, however Coach Olsen was able to take and get a lot of his younger guys into the game, and get their feet wet at the College level. The Cats had only 3 hits, 3 runs, and also had 3 errors in game 1. The Cats ended up losing game 1 with a score of 3-11. Game 2, and game 3, had a lot of similarities. The Cats came out in both games with something to prove, the Cats wanted to show CNCC that Weber State Baseball was not just a club team. WSU showed up in a hurry in game 2 and 3, they put up runs early and often. Coach Olsen said, "We were a different team in those two games. That was what I was expecting for this opening weekend, we are a good team and we just didn't show it in game 1. With a great pitching performance from returning starter Casey Anderson, and some solid hitting all around gave Weber State their first W of the season. I was very impressed with our team, I emphasized the fact that we needed to find our swagger, in game 1 we did not have a swagger. Games 2 and 3 really had a different feel to it, we came out from the begining with an attitude and it showed on both sides of the ball." Weber State won game 2,  3-11 and game 3, 1-9 the Cats really played well. In Game 4 the Cats had a harder battle, but ended up with a 7-5 victory. Every player got some playing time, the Cats were really able to get some young guys in the game early and often. "There were some of these young guys that really impressed me with how they played. Landon Favero a Freshman outfielder made a spectacular diving catch, Chris Abbott hit the ball hard every time, and Colton Hansen played solid in every aspect of the game. That is just a few of the great things that I saw out of our young guys, over the 4 game spand." Coach Olsen went on to say "We are going to be good, our pitching is deep, our defense is solid, our hitters are good, and our chemistry is solid. We by no means played to our fullest capabilities, which is scary because we really played well. By spring I expect to be executing at a high level, and the Wildcats will be dangerous." All in all the Cats played very well and earned themselves what hopes to be the first of many series wins in the 2009-2010 season.

Cuts Made At WSU, Fall Roster Kept At 33...

The Coaches at WSU had to take long hard looks at many players through out the two week tryouts. Coach Olsen stated, "I want a big squad, I want guys to push each other for playing time, and starting positions. This is a special year at Weber State, most years we have a handful of guys that don't have a lot of experience in playing baseball. This year I could take and play 20 guys in 8 positions. This is something that will make us better than ever because we will be able to play the guys that are hitting." Weber has kept around 20-25 guys for fall ball in the past, but Coach Olsen emphasized the importance of having a big team, "when you have 30 guys that gives us an opportunity to scrimage frequently, have a lot more depth in the bull pen, and a lot more depth throughout all the positions." Coach Olsen set out with a purpose this year, Weber State is going to establish that they are a competitor at the National level on an annual basis. A lot of hard work has been put in all ready, both from Coaches and players. Tuesday September 1st the cuts were made for the fall 2009 WSU roster. The roster is starting to take form, and Weber will learn a lot about its team starting this weekend. Coach Olsen said, " I expect some great things from this team, I am excited about this opening weekend. We have been working out against each other, and it will be good to finally all be on the same team. We have some real surprises coming out of tryouts and I see some young players really coming in and playing key roles for the 2009-2010 season." Weber State opens its 2009 - 2010 season starting this friday in Rangely, Colorado against  CNCC.____________________________August 30th 2009----- Tryouts For The 2009-2010 WSU Wildcats... After week 1 of tryouts for the WSU Wildcats was everything and more that Coach Duncan Olsen expected. The returning guys came out looking really good, and some young guys really looked good in this first week. The first week went really well, and guys really stepped up to the plate looking as though they want to play. Thursday night had a little bit of a hang up however, freshman first basemen Braden Mueller broke his wrist on a collision at first base. Coach Olsen said " this injury hurts us, Braden is a solid player and a good kid. We will have to move people around to try and fill his shoes, but we will have to do what ever we can to manage. I feel really bad for Braden because he had worked really hard this fall and now he will have to work twice as hard to get back for our spring season." As a whole the Cats look really good, and have high expectations for 2009-2010. Tryouts continue tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at Syracuse High School. The Wildcats have had a nice long month of non-mandatory work outs, guys have shown up and put in lots of hard work. We have a good core of returners that have been committed to getting our team back to the World Series. Derick Roskelly, Dirk Barber, Brandon Noyes, Matt Hamilton, and Kayleb Kester provide some good leadership, and are helping take pressure off of first year Coach Duncan Olsen. The first week of school has crept up on to us and that means so has the official tryouts of the WSU Wildcats. Tryouts begin on Tuesday August 25th at 5:00 p.m. at Syracuse High School. There is an official tryout fee, that cost is $50. Any and all interested players are welcome to come and tryout for the 2009-2010 season. Coach Olsen has stated many times during this fall that no spot has been earned, there is a lot of talent and it may take all of the fall and some of the spring to really know just who will be at which positions. The Cats are ready to get out and try for a second straight trip to the NCBA World Series, as well as another Conference and Regional Title. Coach Olsen stated that the picture below pretty much sums it up " We have a new expectation, at the end of the regular season I want to bring home yet another Regional Title." "We have the talent to do so, and I expect to great things from the 2009-2010 year."

The Cats Hoisting Thier First Regional Title Since 2003...

The Cats will be going back to work on Tuesday and Thursday @ 5:00. There is only two more weeks of unofficial workouts, then the Wildcats take to the field for official tryouts. "We have a lot of talent, and guys are going to have to work very hard to earn a spot on this years team." "I think that the competition for positions will only make our team stronger once spring rolls around" said Coach Olsen. For more information get a hold of Coach Olsen -435-459-9665

WILDCATS BEGIN WORK OUTS... Coach Olsen is very excited and anxious about getting going on the fall work outs, then tryouts. Coach Olsen has been out recruiting a lot of good talent coming in for the 2009-2010 season. Coach Olsen stated " I don't think anyone has ever recruited as hard as I have, here at Weber.""We have always relied on guys just coming to Weber and hoping for the best." Coach Olsen's efforts were very successful this year. "We have a lot of good freshmen coming in this fall.""The All-Area MVP, Colby Abbott, was a big pick up as well as many of the other freshmen." The bigger recruits that are coming into the fall are the past proven stars. Nate Miller, Casey Anderson, and Chad Ellis are three past proven stars who are coming out to help WSU head for a second straight trip to the World Series. Non mandatory work outs have begun for the Cats, and will continue this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at Syracuse High School.
