Battle of the Wildcats Goes To Weber State...
Sunday the WSU Wildcats ranked #8 in the NCBA and the University Of Arizona WIldcats ranked #2 faced off in an intense double header. Game one was a pitching duel that face the ace of U of A and the freshman pitcher from WSU Kort Christofferesen. The Weber State bats finally woke up from their winter slumber and produced runs to help Weber capture its first win, as well as the first official win for both Kort and Coach Duncan Olsen. Solid hitting by Trevor Evans and Brandon Noyes were a big factor, but the biggest was probably secondbasemen Dirk Barber. Dirk led off the inning several times with a hit, we were able to move him around and score him that really set the tone. Game 2 was a very exciting game to say the least. Weber jumped out to a early 8 to 2 lead only to see it taken away by a couple of big innings by the Arizona Wildcats at 9 to 8. Both teams were starting to get chippy when in the top of the 6th inning the WSU Wildcats struck a huge blow, a 3 run homerun from sophomore outfielder Chad Barber. The momentum was back in the favor of Weber State, Andrew Torgersen came in and held U of A right where they were and set the game up for Justin Fuhriman to get the save. After the exciting two game series it looks as though Weber State has another new rivalry. The WSU Cats got a huge boost from their entire team, when asked Coach Olsen said, "this was definitely a TEAM WIN, I used just about everyone I had, this was a big series for us and hopefully it sets us out on the right path." Weber State takes to the field again on Monday to play another NCBA top 25 team in Arizona State.
Rough First Series For The Cats....
With their first series in the books the Wildcats start their season 0-4. With the slow start of the bats the Cats were only able to get 5 total runs in the four games. The bats struggling was a big reason for the dropping of the first series, when you strike out 26 times in four games and leave 14 runners in scoring position it comes back to haunt you. The pitching for the Wildcats was solid, Kayleb Kester pitched a 1 hitter and allowed 0 runs in his first outing. New comer Clint Felion also had a solid start in his first appearance on the mound for the Cats. Coach Olsen stated " They have a big advantage on us from the get go, they have been out in this nice weather getting actual game time experience and that goes along way. I saw several good things, young players stepping up veterans leading the way things will bounce our way if we keep working as hard as we are working. I am confident that we will figure things out and turn this first road trip around." The Wildcats take to the field again tomorrow afternoon, where the number 8 Weber State WIldcats will take on number 2 Arizona Wildcats.
Wildcats Season Almost Here...
Weber State is on their way to another season, the Cats are excited to get started. One of the biggest rosters the team has ever had, looks to pay off in the depth of the lineup and pitching rotation. A year ago the Cats had a total of 16 on their roster, and made it to the World Series, this year the Cats come into the season with 30 players, nearly doubled the roster size. The quality of the athlete has improved with the success that Weber State had just a year ago. Cats head into their final week of winter workouts prior to hitting the road to Arizona for their first games. Weber State Baseball Just Around The Corner...
With December gone and January around the corner WSU Baseball gets going for another exciting year. The Wildcats are excited about the new season, we lost three important pitchers this off season, Casey Anderson, both Jordan Postel, and Kort Christofferesen transfered to SLCC. Coach Olsen said "they were all big parts of our team, both in the rotation and the field. We managed to fill their spots probably better than we could have on such short notice. Transfer players Clint Felion and Breck Snyder will come in and help our team try to fill the void." Weber also lost fall starting center fielder Joe Bond due to grades, however Coach Olsen was able to fill that void with transfer outfielder Taylor Hood. "With the talent we already had in the outfield with the Colton's, Landon, Matt Hamilton, and Chad Barber, the additions of Breck and Taylor only add to our depth" said Coach Olsen. "It is rare for a team to come into spring with as much depth as we have, I wanted to have a deep team but didn't know how strong our depth would be. There is good and bad that comes from this, the bad is obviously playing time not everyone will get as much as they want or maybe even deserve. The good is the constant competition in practice, pushing each other to get better is never a bad thing" said Olsen. Weber gets set to start spring workouts the same week Weber State is back in session. Weber has a lot of hard work to get to seeing as their first games will be less than a month away once practice starts. For players who are intersted in trying out please contact Coach Olsen - que_chido_1@hotmail.com or 435-459-9665 Weber only has two open spots left on their final spring roster, so competition will be tough.
Cats Start Winter Workouts...
Weber State takes an important step towards their 2010 season. The winter workout portion of the Cats schedule is essential to the early success that Weber State comes across. Coach Olsen is ready for his team to get in and work hard, the more we put in now the more we will get back in the end. Weber State is excited about the upcoming season, and are hard at work to make a second straight trip to the World Series.
