The Heat's Kevin Leach serves North York's Jerome Persaud one of six strikeouts on the day.
The first version of the 2012 'Battle of York' was bound to be a good game and it did not disappoint. Last time the teams met, the Heat took the 2-1 loss and had their minds on payback.
The Masons arrived ready to roll despite a last minute cancel from 2 players. Rob Leth took the mound for the Masons and despite a couple walks and hits scattered, he had his offspeed pitches going and pitched a strong 4 shutout innings. Kevin Leach got the start for the Heat and despite a little wildness and a hit allowed, pitched 5 shutout innings striking out 6.
The Heat were feeling out of sorts at the plate and Jerome Persaud came into the game in the bottom of the 5th and the Heat turned it on. Walks and timely hits from Wadden and Leach helped the Heat put up a 5 spot to put Leach in line for the win and Scotland in line for the save. The Masons had other ideas as Persaud hit a triple to welcome Scotland into the game and Leth followed it with a bloop single to score a run. Persaud kept the Heat at bay in the 6th so the Masons were down 4 with a final chance. Rob Scotland had extreme control issues allowed several walks in a row and before he knew it, the score was 5-4 Heat with bases loaded, 0 outs and Rob Leth staring out to the mound. Kevin Leach visited the mound for a chat and Scotland promptly struck out Leth, and forced a popout by Persaud to secure the win for East York.
The Masons played a hell of a game for being short handed and certainly gave the Heat all they could handle. East York also saw their no-hit streak end in the 2nd inning after a run of 22 innings. Next up for the Heat is their first ever meeting with the St.Clair Saints and North York takes on the Roncesvalles Rockets.
Rob Leth recorded 7 putouts on Saturday to give him 18 for the season
