August 01, 2010 - On a very hot and humid day in Nashville, TN, NCC captain Zaheer won the toss, and after deliberating with players, made a bold decision to put the Vols to bat first. NCC was hoping to get some quick wickets to put pressure on the Vols. The outfield was quite heavy, and a little wet; much to NCC's advantage as Vols batsmen struggled to score freely. NCC opening bowlers (Gary Wynter and Augustus) bowled with a tight line and length, and did not allow the Vols openers to score freely. At the end of first break, Vols were 56 for no loss. Vols openers (Arun and Sujay) built a good foundation for an onslaught of runs in later overs. Zaheer made a strategic move and brought Fazal (leg spinner) from the school end, and himself from the other end. Zaheer broke the opening partnership, and then Fazal mesmerized Vols batsmen with his leg spinners and occasional googlies. By the end of the second break, the Vols had lost 6 wickets with an addition of 60 odd runs. Fazal took 5 wickets for 30 runs in 8 overs. NCC bowlers kept the pressure, and bowled out Vols for 158 runs (Mark 4-11-0, Gary 6-28-1, Zaheer 8-35-1, Naseer 7-25-1). For Vols, Arun was the top scorer with 38 runs, followed by Sujay 23 and Bharat 21.
Though 159 in 40 overs don’t seem like a large total, considering the skills of Vols bowlers, NCC batsmen knew that it would not be a cake walk, and they would have to fight for each run! NCC needed a good opening start, that they got with Zaheer and Augustus. Vols opening bowlers bowled very well; especially Srinivas, who was making it quite hard for NCC openers. There were a few strong LBW shouts, but it did not deter NCC batsmen. Augustus was the first one to go. Mitul joined Zaheer and score started moving. Both played great shots, and took the score to 90 for one. When it looked like NCC would cruise to the target; Vols captain Arun made a change and brought himself from the field end and Purdvi from the school end. Both bowlers ripped through NCC middle order like a typical Tennessee tornado. The damage was 5 wickets in 11 runs. Lodhi brothers (Naseer and Sameer) were left wondering on the crease how to get the remaining 55 runs. Both started with great patience and took one's and two's with an occasional four to stabilize the ship. At the start of the 27th over, NCC needed 21 runs. Naseer decided to take matters into his own hand - the result was dot, dot, SIX, SIX, SIX, dot, one and then the first ball of 28th over another SIX - game over. NCC won the game with 4 wickets in hand, and earned bragging rights. Vols bowing figures (Srinivas 6-33-0, Arun 5.1-21-3, Purdvi 5-20-2, Aniket 4-35-1, Srimanth 3-16-0, Bimal 3-34-0). For NCC, Naseer was top scorer with 46, Mitul 42, Zaheer 31, Augustus 17 and Sameer 10.
