Welcome to the web site for the Northwood High School Coed Volleyball team.  Northwood is located in Silver Spring, MD and participates in MCPS athletic program.  Northwood's coed volleyball team is coached by Melissa Gonzalez.

Volleyball Players Honored for Academics and Athletic Feats

 

Two members of Northwood High School’s coed volleyball team received the Scholar Athlete Award and eight players on the coed team earned the Minds in Motion Award at the school’s Spring Sports Award Night on Thursday (May 17).

 

Northwood used the occasion in the school auditorium to shine the spotlight on its top performers in the classroom as well as on the playing fields.

 

Hailed as Scholar Athletes – the evening’s highest honor for student-athletes -- for attaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the spring season were coed volleyballers Abigail Sauber and Casey Patterson.

 

In addition, eight players were cited with the Minds in Motion Award for recording at least a 3.25 average during the third marking period of 2011-12 at Northwood. The recipients were: Casey Patterson, Rebecca Cohen, Evan O'Neill, Lauren Gunnison, Abigail Sauber, Kaitlyn Bristol, Kimberley Pierre and Pablo Ayzanoa.

 

Ray Trail and Melissa Gonzales, coaches of the coed and boys volleyball teams, presented his awards for accomplishments on the court: Malik Smith, boys volleyball rookie of the Year; Emmitt Reddock, boys volleyball Most Improved Player; Kimberley Pierre, coed volleyball Unsung Hero; and Evan O’Neill, coed volleyball MVP.

 


 

Season Ends with loss to Watkins Mill on May 2

 

The 8-3 Coed Volleyball team ended their season with a loss in match one of the playoff season against the Watkins Mill Wolverines on Wednesday, May 2nd.   

 

 

The Wolverines won in 3 games.  Details to follow.

Game 11:  Northwood at Paint Branch

 

Northwood played their final match of the season at Paint Branch High School. 

 

The team played well throughout the night.  They won all 3 games with ease expect for the 2nd game, where they were forced to extend the game and win by a couple extra points. 

 

All players passed well and hit consistently.  It was a good warm up for the Gladiators and for their upcoming playoff game, which is Wednesday, May 2nd at 3:30 at home vs. Watkins Mill.

Game 10:  Rockville at Northwood

 

It was an exciting match at home for the Gladiators as they hosted the Rockville Rams. 

 

Both teams were evenly matched up and the games went long into the night.  It was a true battle of hitting and blocking and all out hustle. 

 

The first game went to the Rams but the second game was won by Northwood.  In the third game the Gladiators won by only 3 points and then lost the next game by 2 points. 

 

In the final game the Gladiators were determined to win and they did!  Evan O’Neill, Casey Patterson and Ashleigh Smith played well for the Gladiators. 24-26, 26-24, 25-22, 25-27, 15-6

Game 9:  Kennedy at Northwood

Game 8: Northwood at Springbrook

 

The Gladiators traveled to Springbrook Friday night to compete against the Blue Devils. 

 

The Gladiators came out confident and ready to play.  The team passed, set and hit well thoughout the night and won the first two games with ease. 

 

In the last game the blue devils picked up a few extra balls and made Northwood work hard for their points.   Northwood commanded the match and beat Springbrook in 3 straight games.

 

25-16, 25-15, 25-20

Game 7:  Seneca Valley at Northwood

 

Northwood hosted Seneca Valley for their 7th game of the season. 

 

Northwood dominated the match from the 1st serve and never looked back. 

 

The Gladiators served, passed and hit consistently throughout the night.  Northwood kept their opponents to single digit scoring in the second game and won the 3rd game with ease. 

 

25-11, 25-9, 25-15

Game 6:  Northwood at Damascus

 

The Gladiators had some tough competition on Monday night at Damascus HS. 

 

After a long bus ride, the Gladiators were slow to get going and lost the first game by 11 points to an undefeated Damascus team.  Northwood played well at points in the match and had some great blocks at the net from Evan O’Neill, Casey Patterson and Ben Kreitzberg. 

 

The Gladiators also served well but the Damascus team was quite dominant and had a height advantage.  Northwood struggled to stay consistent throughout the night and lost the match in 3 games. 

 

14-25, 13-25, 15-25

Game 5:  Watkins Mill at Northwood

 

 

The Gladiators had their first game back after spring break on their home court against Watkins Mill. 
 
The Gladiators had an amazing 6 point come back in the first game and won by 2 points. 
 
The second game was almost identical to the first but the Gladiators couldn’t put together the come back and lost by 11 points. 
 
Going into the 3rd game, the match was even and Northwood stepped up and brought back their energy and won the 3rd and 4thgames by 10 points frustrating the Watkins Mill team and sending them home with a loss. 
 
It was an overall team effort and everyone played well.

Game 4:  Northwood at Richard Montgomery

 

It was quite an exciting match in Richard Montgomery’s gym Wednesday night as the Gladiators traveled to take on the Rockets. 

 
Many different lead changes and momentum shifts occurred throughout the night.  The first game went to the Rockets as the Gladiators were slow to warm up. 
 
Northwood came back forceful and amped up in the 2nd game and won by 7 points.  The 3rd game went back to the Rockets, which put them up 2-1. 
 
The Gladiators went on the attack and dominated the 4th game keeping the Rockets to single digit scoring and forcing a 5th game tie breaker. 
 
The fifth game was even until the very end of the match when the Rockets won by just 2 points. 
 
Highlights from the Gladiators included Evan O’Neill dominating the net with hitting and blocking, Ben Kreitzberg hitting hard and Ashleigh Smith setting and serving the ball well. 
 
15-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-9, 13-15

Game 3:  Northwood at Poolesville

 

 

After a long ride to Poolesville on a Monday afternoon, the coed team stepped off the bus to take on Poolesville HS. 

 

The coed team was ready to play but so were the Poolesville Falcons as they stunned the Gladiators in the first game only allowing 11 points scored. 

 

Northwood changed up their strategy a little for the second and third games and managed to score a few more points but still lost the match in 3 games. 

 

11-25, 16-25, 14-25

Game 2:  Blake at Northwood

 

The Coed team played their second game at home Friday evening against Blake HS. 

 

The match started off strong in favor of Northwood with accurate serving and tremendous hustle from the Gladiators.  The team lost some of its edge as Blake started to play better in the second game losing by 3 points. 

 

However, Northwood regained some momentum and displaying some heart went on to win the 3rd and 4th game with great team work.

Game 1:  Quince Orchard at Northwood

Northwood's coed volleyball team defeated visiting Quince Orchard in three games, 25-12, 25-15, 25-9, on Wednesday evening (March 21).

 

Coach Melissa Gonzalez's report: :The Gladiators looked strong and dominant from the very beginning of the match.  Serving was consistant, passing was accurate, blocking was prevelant and hitting was forceful!
Northwood played with very little mistakes and got off on a great foot to start their season by winning in 3 straight games.  Northwood even kept Quince Orchard in single digit scoring in the last game."

Coed Volleyball Enters 2012 Campaign With High Hopes

 

Coach Melissa Gonzales returns as head coach of the Northwood coed volleyball team, leading the squad through an 11-match regular season slate.

 

The 2012 campaign begins on March 21 at home versus Quince Orchard. The Glads play a total of six matches at home, including one evening match on April 11 at the Northwood gym versus Watkins Mill.

 

The team competes in the state’s West Region as a Class 3A school.
