Welcome to the web site for the Northwood High School Swimming and Diving Team. Northwood High School is located in Silver Spring, Md., part of the Montgomery County Public Schools. The Gladiators participate in Division IV of MCPS Swimming and Diving. The team is coached by Stephanie Vukovich.

Swimming/Diving Team Members Honored for Academics and Athletic Feats
Four members of Northwood High School’s coed swimming and diving team received the Scholar Athlete Award and an amazing 23 team members earned the Minds in Motion Award at the school’s Winter Sports Awards Night on Wednesday (Feb. 29).
Northwood used the occasion in the school auditorium to shine the spotlight on its top performers in the classroom as well as on the playing fields.
Hailed as Scholar Athletes – the evening’s highest honor for student-athletes -- for attaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the winter season were Gabriella Cottilli, Emerson Milam, Chelsea Vanderweele and Anna Zastrow.
In addition, 23 swimmers and divers were cited with the Minds in Motion Award for recording at least a 3.25 average during the second marking period of 2011-12 at Northwood. The recipients were Dawit Blackwell, Jake Blakely, William Bbravo, Ricardo Francis, Nicholas Gunnison, Luis Gutierrez, Anthony Jannotta, Moises Morales, Evan O'Neill, Ross Ogden, Neil Sauter, Christopher Stubbs, Andrew Vanderweele, Gabriella Cottilli, Jenny Eisenhuth, Amanda Frew, Lauren Gunnison, Emerson Milam, Alexandra Moser, Lara Skibbie, Chelsea Vanderweele, Anna Zastrow and Morgan Kershner.
Stephanie Vukovich, coach of the swimming and diving team, presented her awards for accomplishments in the pool: MVP (boys), Austin Moore; MVP (girls), Chelsea Vanderweele; Unsung Hero, Nolan Jannotta; and Rookie of the Year, Shannon O'Rourke.
Chelsea Vanderweele received some major recognition from USA Swimming, being named to the SCHOLASTIC ALL-AMERICA TEAM -- high school student-athletes who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and who have achieved the required time standard in a single event.

Northwood Pair Take 1st Titles at Maryland State Swimming and Diving Championships
Results from 2/25/12 at University of Maryland, College Park, Md.:
Northwood swimmers showed their class, determination and spirit in the first ever State Championship. As a team, the Northwood girls finished 12th and the boys finished 13th.
All of our individual swimmers scored points for the team. Austin Moore and Chelsea VanderWeele became the first individual State Champions in swimming for Northwood. Austin in the 200 Free and Chelsea in the 200 Free and 100 Back. Austin also finished 2nd in the 100 Fly. Andrew VanderWeele placed 8th in the 500 Free and Emerson Milam finished 11th in the 500 Free.
The boys 200 Medley Relay (VanderWeele, O'Neill, Moore, Jannotta) finished 12th and the 400 Free Relay (VanderWeele, Jannotta, O'Neill, Moore) finished 11th, both scoring points for the team. The girls 400 Free Relay (VanderWeele, Collins, O'Rourke, Milam) finished 13th and scored points as well for the team.

Senior puts Northwood swimming on map--VanderWeele wins 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke at 3A/2A/1A region meet "" ""
Regional Results: In the first ever regional swim meet for Montgomery County and Northwood, Northwood placed 9th out of 13 teams in the 3A,2A,1A West Region. Austin Moore and Chelsea VanderWeele have automatically qualified for States. Chelsea won both the 200 Free and the 100 Back. Austin won the 200 Free and placed 2nd in the 100 Fly. The top 3 swimmers in each event automatically qualify. The next fastest 12 in the state will also qualify.
***Based on results in other regions, the following swimmers have qualified for individual events. Emerson Milam- 500 Free and Andrew VanderWeele- 500 Free
Additionally, the following relays have qualified to swim at the State Championship; Mens 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay;
Womens 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay. Congratulations to all of the Northwood swimmers who have qualified for the state meet.
METROs Update: Northwood came in 30th place out of 47 teams represented at METROs. Congratulations to all of our swimmers who participated in this prestigous event.

Chelsea placed 13th in the 100 back and finished 2nd in the 500 free. Congratulations to Austin and Chelsea.

Swimmers and Divers Enter Season With High Hopes
The Northwood varsity swimming and diving team will compete in seven meets in 2011-12, which includes two contests in the Martin Luther King Pool in White Oak, considered the home facility for the Gladiators.
The season is the third for Stephanie Vukovich at the helm of the Gladiator aquatics teams.
The regular season schedule kicks off on Dec. 3. All meets take place on Saturdays through the final weekend in January. The Gladiators do not face neighborhood rival Montgomery Blair HS in swimming competition.
Northwood continues to compete as a Class 3A school in the state’s West Region. Several other familiar opponents, such as Clarksburg HS, were moved up to Class 4A because of their growing enrollment. Every two years, the state reclassifies high schools based on student enrollment gains and losses. Northwood, with roughly 1,400 students, is one of the smallest schools in the 3A West.
