Northwood Golfers Honored for Academics and Athletic Feats

A member of Northwood High School’s golf team received the Scholar Athlete Award and six golfers earned the Minds in Motion Award at the school’s Fall Sports Award Night on Tuesday (Nov. 8).

Northwood used the occasion in the school auditorium to shine the spotlight on its top performers in the classroom as well as on the playing fields.

Hailed as a Scholar Athlete – the evening’s highest honor for student-athletes -- for attaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the fall season was Andrew Bryson.

In addition, a half dozen golf team members were cited with the Minds in Motion Award for recording at least a 3.25 average during the first marking period of 2011-12 at Northwood. The recipients were Amanda Frew, Andrew Bryson, Cary Koenig, Eric Moreno, Andrew Soncrant and Ian Winick

Ready to tee off, the Northwood golf team poses before heading to Redgate for match 1.

Match 1 at Redgate (Wednesday August 31)

Eric "El Tigre" Moreno made his debut on Wednesday for the Northwood Golf Team as the number 3 golfer. He came in 2nd in his group, shooting a career low of 59, topping it off with a par on the long 500 plus yard par 5. Ian "In It To Win It" Winick shot a team best 50 putting the team on his back, opening with a giant drive that everyone will remember. Cary "Curry C Swaggamasta" Koenig shot a 56, ending with a 15 foot putt that didn't seem to stand a chance...unless he was the one to hit it. Andrew "Dro Doh" Soncrant shot a career best 61 in his Northwood golfing debut, chipping onto greens like nobody's business. Andrew "Lil B" Bryson also shot his career best, carding a score of 65. On the 7th hole par 3 his approach shot had all the coaches talking. Northwood placed for the first time in years and looks to be the strongest group of golfers in school history since the reopening. The next match with be Tuesday, September 6th vs. Einstein, Blake, and Wheaton at Redgate Golf Course. Attendance in the crowd was low this week so please come out and support your school golf team. Go Gladiator Golf!  -- reported by Ian Winick

Northwood Golfers Enter 2011 Season with High Hopes

The Northwood varsity golf team will play a five-match schedule in 2011, which includes three contests at the Redgate Golf Course.

The season begins for Coach Allyn Crews' Gladiators on Aug. 31 against three other foes.

Northwood continues to compete as a Class 3A school in the state’s West Region. Several other familiar opponents, such as Clarksburg HS, were moved up to Class 4A because of their growing enrollment. Every two years, the state reclassifies high schools based on student enrollment gains and losses. Northwood, with roughly 1,400 students, is one of the smallest schools in the 3A West.
