Girls tennis honors Wei and Catada

The Northwood girls tennis team singled out two members for post-season honors: Lisa Wei and  Jazzten Catada.

Wei, a senior, was accorded the team’s Most Valuable Performer honor for what Coach Bramdatt Goolsarran said was her “display of great talent [and] the admiration of her team, opponents, coaches, spectators.” Wei won nine of her 12 single matches.

The coach cited Catada, a sophomore, with the Unsung Hero Award, saying she was the “one who attended all practices, gives her very best, displays great attitude and excitement. She would remain after practice to master the skills of the game; she assisted to secure victory for Northwood.”

[Photos of award winners appear in Susan Shaffer's Smugmug gallery.]

Goolsarran offered a short wrapup of the 2009 season at Northwood's fall sports recognition program on Tuesday night (Nov. 10).

The coach’s other comments:

“In division matches, they won 3 and lost 5. They made history for the first time by defeating Watkins Mill High School 7-0. Northwood’s #1 singles player defeated BCC’s #1 and Magruder’s # 1. Northwood # 1, #2, #3 singles players defeated Blake’s  #1, #2, and #3.

“Northwood’s #1, #3 and # 4 singles players entered the county championship tournament with #1 and #2 making it to the second round.

“At this time I would like to recognize the following seniors and them well in their future endeavors: Shubhangri Maheshwari, Schasle Fowell and Tsion Seifu.

“Tsion  Seifu  represented  the school for 4 years, was vice captain and captain. -- posted by by jay p. goldman, 10:45 p.m. 11/10/09

Einstein 4, Northwood 3

As tennis fans know, the final score does not necessarily reflect the quality of actual play during the match. Still, a win is a win and a loss is a loss.

The Gladiators girls tennis team closed out its dual meet season with a narrow 4-3 loss to host Einstein HS on Thursday afternoon (Oct. 8).

The Glads scored wins in the first three singles bouts. Singles results: Lisa Wei (6-2, 6-3), Natalia Seo (6-4, 6-1), Diana Vergara (6-3, 6-4) and Tsion Seifu (1-6, 1-6).

But Northwood dropped the three doubles matches to the Tigers. Doubles results: Michelle Catada & Emily Cabrera (1-6, 1-6), Jazzten Catada & Schasle Fawell (6-4, 1-6, 6-7), losing the 3rd set on a 2-7 tiebreaker; and Theresa Harrison & Carmen Coreas (0-6, 0-6).

All the returning team members have markedly improved since last year, according to Coach Bramdatt Goolsaran.

He deserves much  credit for his coaching style that led to the improvements, said senior Tsion Seifu, the team captain. The Northwood tennis ladies are to be congratulated for all their hard work. If I weren't graduating, you can bet I would be on the courts next season."

Though the regular season has ended, Northwoods four singles players  Wei, Seo, Vergara and Seifu -- will continue on at the Montgomery County tournament next week at a site to be determined. posted by jay p. goldman with reporting by patricia seifu, 8:45 p.m., 10/8/09

Entering its final week of the regular season, the Gladiators girls varsity tennis squad dropped its latest outing to visiting Gaithersburg HS on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 6).

Northwood took its only points in No. 2 and No. 3 singles: N. Seo (6-2,  6-2) and D. Vergara (6-1, 6-0). Dropping their singles events were Lisa Wei (2-6, 2-6) and T.  Seifu (0-6, 0-6).

Despite the team setback, each team member has steadily improved in individual technique and in endurance.

Gaithersburg is a top level Division 3 team, and Northwood also has played several Division 1 teams this year as well.

The final dual match is slated for Thursday at Einstein HS. Then Coach Bramdatt Goolsarran will send several members of his squad into the post-season county tournament, which opens the following week. -- posted by jay p. goldman, 10:30 p.m., 10/6/09
