Northwood Harriers Advance to States for 1st Time
Northwood's boys cross country team edged Clarksburg HS by a single point to take 7th place in the West Region 3A cross country championships on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 5) at Watkins Mill HS, qualifying the Gladiator runners for the Maryland State Championship Cross Country Meet for the first time.
The state event takes place on Nov. 14. The harriers will represent Northwood's first team to participate in a state championship event since the school reopened in fall 2004 (though several individual athletes at Northwood have advanced to state tournaments in indoor and outdoor track and field in recent years).
The Gladiator team was led by senior Patrick Shelley's 16th place finish. He was followed by juniors Enricco Reumante and Scott Sullivan, sophomore Austin Moore, junior Garrett Jaso, sophomore Nick Hall and freshman Neil Sauter.
The Northwood girls' team had its first runner qualify for the state meet as freshman Morgan Kershner finished in 9th place overall. The Glad girls team, hampered by injuries and the flu, finished in 9th in the team scoring as well with Elizabeth Ung, Naami Wagner, Anne Chernikoff and Nancy Vo completing the scoring.
The Gladiator runners will run in the 3A state championship races on Nov. 14 in Parkton, Md., hosted by Hereford High School. The girls 3A event starts at 10:30 a.m. with the boys 3A race slated to start at 11:30 a.m. -- posted by jay p. goldman, 10:30 p.m. 11/5/09

Boys and Girls Record Best X-C Finishes Since School Reopened
Northwood's boys and girls cross-country teams competed Saturday in the Montgomery County championship meet in Gaithersburg and turned in their best finishes since Northwood reopened and started varsity play in 2006.
The Gladiator girls team finished in 16th place led by freshman Morgan Kershner's 37th place finish. She was the 4th fastest 9th grade runner in the field. Kershner was followed by Corey Rowley, a strong run by freshman Ann Chernikoff, and Naami Wagner, while Noely Jacobs and Lara Skibbie came across the line together to finish the scoring. Their finish was especially impressive after illness and injury had taken out 3 of the typical top 7 lady Gladiators.
The boys team finished in 15th place led by senior Patrick Shelley's 45th place finish. Scott Sullivan, Austin Moore and Ricco Reumante finished in a cluster within 6 seconds of one another, with West Boliek and Garrett Jaso completing their scoring. The boys finish was also impressive, considering most of the team was not at the starting line until seconds before the gun went off.
Both teams, which are coached by Michael Sauter, received their trophies for completing their dual meets against Division IV opponents undefeated. Their finish Saturday will move Northwood to Division III in county competition next year.

Gladiator Boys and Girls Take 2nd in Inaugural Downcounty Cross Country Event
Northwood High School took 2nd place in both the boys and girls of the first Downcounty Consortium Cross Country Championships, which Northwood hosted on its course on Oct. 14.
One hundred and six high school runners and more than 60 elementary, middle school and downcounty staff and parents competed on Northwood's demanding river course that takes runners through creeks, over logs and up some demanding hills.
Northwood's boys team had four runners earn medals on the Gladiators' way to a 2nd place finish, behind only a strong squad from Einstein HS. The boys were led by senior Patrick Shelley's 3rd place finish. Shelley was joined on the medal stand by Scott Sullivan in 5th, Ricco Reumante in 7th and Austin Moore in 11th.
Northwood's girls' team was led by the Downcounty Consortium champion, freshman Morgan Kershner, who finished the course in 22:19. Diminished by injury and illness this week, the Gladiator girls finished 2nd to Blair HS. Northwood's other medalist finisher was sophomore Corey Rowley in 12th.
The middle school race was won by the team from Silver Spring International Middle School. They were led by 8th grader Morgana D'Ottavi's 1st place finish. She was followed by Takoma Park's Calley Mayer-Marks, and then it was all SSI with Jacob Kindell, Sam Howells, Nicholas Gunnison and Teague Sauter. Vivian Killian also scored for Takoma Park with a 3rd place finish for the girls.
The elementary school race showed the DCC has a lot of great potential with 19 runners from Forest Knolls, Oakland Terrace, Sligo Creek and Piney Branch.
The open race was won by Einstein HS cross country coach Eric DaSilva. Second place went to Benjamin Bond-Lamberty, running for Highland View Elementary. In the open race, 32 runners competed. -- posted by jay p. goldman with reporting by Michael Sauter, 10:20 p.m., 10/16/09 ________________________________________ Gladiator Harriers Edge Blake for Division Title
Both the Northwood girls and boys cross-country teams completed their seasons undefeated in dual meets with wins at home on Tuesday (Oct. 6) over Blake HS. The victories enabled the Gladiators to snare the countys Division IV Championships.
The girls were led by freshman Morgan Kershner, who finished the dual meet season undefeated. She was followed by sophomores Chelsea VanderWeele, Corey Rowley and Elizabeth Ung, with the scoring completed by senior Naami Wagner. Northwood's top 5 finished before Blake's third runner crossed the line.
The Gladiator boys faced a stiffer challenge. The Blake boys had posted faster finishes on a flat course at the Keyser Invitational on the prior Saturday, making the Glad boys the underdogs in the head-to-head contest. But Northwood knew the hills of their home River Course would pose a challenge for both teams.
Junior Ricco Reumante came out of the woods after 2.5 miles with Blake's first runner, Chip Seldon, who had beat him Saturday. They were neck-and-neck as they disappeared down the hill at the back of the Northwood playing fields with about a quarter mile to go. Reumante emerged alone at the top of the hill and cruised the rest of the way to victory.
His mates Patrick Shelley and Scott Sullivan were close behind with their consistent solid runs, and the victory was sealed by an amazing performance by sophomore Austin Moore. The latter finished behind four Blake runners just three days prior, but he stepped it up in on his home course and showed them his heels.
The win leaves the Gladiator boys undefeated in dual meets -- 12-0 over the last two years.

Northwood scored decisive victories in cross country on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 30) over John F. Kennedy HS in a dual meet held at Wheaton Regional Park.
Both the boys and girls teams triumphed over their Downcounty Consortium rival.
The Kennedy Girls were fired up to challenge the favored Gladiators and four of their top runners ran more than a minute faster than they had just one week earlier on the same course. But the Lady Glads held strong with Morgan Kershner remaining undefeated in dual meets, winning her third race. Chelsea VanderWeele nosed out a Cavalier at the line as Northwood's No. 2 runner, with Corey Rowley, Naami Wagner and Elizabeth Ung cleaning up the remaining scoring places for a 25-30 Gladiator win.\
The Gladiator boys continued their undefeated reign with Ricco Reumante, Patrick Shelley and Scott Sullivan finishing 1-2-3, leading the Gladiators to a 19-36 victory. Austin Moore finished 5th and Garrett Jaso outsprinted Kennedy's 3rd man to break up a Cavalier cabal at the finish line. A.J. Walderhaug dropped almonst 3 minutes from his time on a faster course last week to step into a varsity spot for Northwood.
Next up for the Gladiators is a home meet against Blake HS on Tuesday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. start. This will serve as the MCPS Division 4 championship-clinching race for both the boys' and girls' cross country teams at Northwood. -- posted by jay p. goldman with reporting by michael sauter, 10:45 p.m., 10/1/09

Northwood Harriers Claim All Top Places in Quad Meet
The Northwood girls were expecting to win the quad meet against Paint Branch, Seneca Valley, and Wheaton, but they were not expecting to sweep the top five spots in the race hosted by Paint Branch HS in Burtonsville (9/23/09). Up until last year, Northwood had not managed to convince five girls to run for the team since the school reopened in 2004. In 2008 they had a full scoring team, and now the team has five strong girls that are mostly young and inexperienced.
All of Northwood's top 5 girls -- freshman Morgan Kershner, sophomores Corey Rowley and Chelsea VanderWeele, senior Naami Wagner, and sophomore Elizabeth Ung -- have yet to be beaten by any girl runner in a dual meet. Junior Nancy Vo and freshman Ann Chernikoff rounded out the varsity scoring for the Lady Glads.
The Boy's Cross Country team, which has not been beaten in a dual meet since September 11, 2008, continued their despotic reign by dispatching Paint Branch, Seneca Valley and Wheaton. They lost the top spot to a runner from Paint Branch, but took the next 4 with Junior Ricco Reumante, Senior Patrick Shelley, Junior Scott Sullivan, and Sophomore Austin Moore. Junior Garrett Jaso, and Freshmen West Boliek and Neil Sauter completed the varsity scoring for Northwood.
