Grubb & Ellis Wraps up Strong Summer Season

Baseball 2007 came to an end for the Westside/Grubb & Ellis program on Tuesday, August 7th at the American Legion state tournament in Elkhorn. Playing on the final day of the tournament, G&E dropped a hard fought, well played elimination game to eventual tournament champion PI Midwest, 7-6 in 11 innings. Grubb & Ellis finished the legion season with a 34-18 record. Included in the strong summer season were tournament championships in the Turf Classic in June along with capturing the Area 1 district championship, knocking off regular season league champ Oakview Construction in the finals. Sitting at 15-12 with losses in eight of its last nine games at the 4th of July break, the team came alive after the holiday break, finishing the second half of the season with a 19-6 record in its final 25 games.

G&E opened the state tournament with an exciting 8-3 win over spring state champion Elkhorn. Grubb knocked out all-state pitcher Matt Freeman early and turned 6 double plays in the first round victory. In round 2, Grubb & Ellis captured one of the more memorable wins in program history. Trailing eventual champion PI Midwest 7-3 in the bottom of the 8th, Grubb got a 2-run homer from Gregg Carver to pull within two runs. The rally continued with 2 outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth as the team rallied for 3 runs and an improbable 8-7 victory. A controversial call at the plate cost the team dearly the next night in a tough winners bracket final loss to Kearney Runza and dropped G&E into the losers bracket. The team responded by pounding Columbus 16-2 to advance to the tournament's final day behind a complete-game by Ian Burke. G&E made all of its fans and supporters proud with its gritty play and team spirit during the state tournament.

Senior Day A Great Success
Sunday, July 22 marked a special day at Warrior Field. Prior to the season finale against the Deeb Eagles, the five seniors playing their final regular season game as Westside baseball players were honored for all of their accomplishments and hard work as members of the program. Congratulations and best of luck to: Gregg Carver, Ian Burke, Otis Seals, Max Bridges, and Drew Daubman! Thank you seniors!!

Westside Baseball Alumni Game
Thanks to all the former players who showed up to participate in the 1st Annual Alumni Game. We had around 40 alumni play in the 7-inning game! A lot of fun and laughs were had by all in attendance. We plan to make this an annual event for Memorial Day weekend so mark your calendars for the 2nd annual game in May of 2008.
