The Saints began the weekend against Mankato, a team that has had much success in the recent past with first, second, and third place finishes the last three years. The game was quiet until the 6th inning when Mankato scored two runs off of Saints starter John Reiwer (a draftee from Dassel-Cokato). Mankato added another run in the 7th to widen their lead to 3-0. The Saints were able to score two runs of their own in the 8th to make the final score of 3-2.
In the second game of the weekend, the Saints faced Savage. The Saints led 9-2 going into the eighth inning. Savage scored two in the eighth and then started the ninth with four doubles and two singles to narrow the gap to 9-8 before St. Michael closed it out. SAINTS CLINCH BERTH IN STATE TOURNAMENT (8/10/08)
The St. Michael Saints clinched the top seed out of the Section 8B playoffs with wins against Delano and Maple Lake, and have secured a berth in the Class B State Tournament. The 2008 State Tournament is being held at Chaska and Shakopee and begins Saturday, August 16th. The Saints are scheduled to open play on Saturday against the Duluth Xpress at 1:30 in Chaska.
In their first game of the Section 8B playoffs, the Saints defeated the Delano Athletics by a score of 2-1. After two scoreless innings, the Saints opened a 1-0 lead on a two-out single by Brandon Valerius followed by two more singles off the bats of Tyler Carlson and Bobby Kneefe.
The Athletics answered with a run of their own in the fifth inning on a sole homerun by Perry Ditty that barely cleared the ivy down the right field line.
After a scoreless sixth inning, the Saints plated another run in the seventh when Valerius reached based on a one-out walk. After Valerius stole second base, Tyler Carlson laid down a perfect drag bunt that moved Valerius to third. Kneefe again drove in Valerius on an RBI ground out to put the Saints ahead 2-1, which is where the game ended.
The Saints offense was led by Carlson and Chris Volkmann who went 3 for 4 and 2 for 4 at the plate, respectively. Kneefe drove in both Saints runs. On the mound, righthander Adam McGrane went the distance allowing only 1 run on five hits and zero walks. McGrane struckout 12 Delano batters along the way to the complete game win.
After the win against Delano, the Saints moved on to face a tough Maple Lake team. The Lakers had defeated the top seeded Hutchinson Huskies in their first round matchup.
The Lakers got off to an early lead with a single run in the second followed by two runs in the third inning on a two-out homerun by Mic Johnson.
The Saints answered in the fifth inning with two runs to bring the score to 3-2. The Saints’ half of the fifth inning was started with a single by Scott Lekatz followed by a walk by Brandon Valerius. After another single by Tyler Carlson that loaded the bases, the Saints hit into two outs before Chris Volkmann drew a four pitch walk to plate Lekatz. With the bases still loaded, Mike Freske worked the count full before being issued a walk of his own that plated Valerius.
In the sixth inning, with the score still 3-2 in favor of the Lakers, Nick Volkmann lead off with a drive over the centerfield fence off of Lakers starter Todd Fuller, who had been holding the Saints hitters in check. The homerun was Nick Volkmann’s first of the year, but none could have been bigger as the drive silenced the Laker crowd and swung the momentum in the Saints favor. The sixth inning ended with the score tied at 3-3.
In the seventh, Chris Volkmann added a homerun of his own, his tenth of the year. Chris Volkmann’s blast, also off of Fuller, put the Saints ahead for good.
The Saints added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Derek Brant which plated Bobby Kneefe and ended the day’s scoring at 5-3. Joe Barbeln went the distance for the Saints on the mound, giving up only 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks. Barbeln struckout 9 batters and only allowed one Laker runner past first base after the third inning on the way to his fifth win of the season.
The Saints win against the Lakers secured the team a berth in the state tournament. The Saints faced the Lakers again on Sunday to determining seeding entering the state tournament.
In the second game against the Lakers, the Saints scored single runs in the second and fourth innings on two ground balls by Derek Brant that plated Chris Volkmann and Kyle Krzmarzick, respectively. The Lakers scored a single run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly. The Lakers had threatened earlier in the second inning, but Saints centerfielder Bobby Kneefe threw out a Lakers runner at the plate to end the inning.
In the sixth inning with the score 2-1 in favor of the Saints, Brandon Valerius entered the batter’s box with the bases loaded and two outs. Valerius stroked a 1-0 pitch to the right-center gap for a triple to score all three runs. The game ended with the Saints up 5-1.
Again, the Saints were helped by another complete game effort from their pitching staff as starter Paul Schuum went the distance. Schumm allowed one unearned run on 8 hits and zero walks. Schumm struck out 4 Lakers batters and was able to help out the Saints defense by pitching out a couple jams in the middle innings.
