Swimming/Diving Honors Vanderweele, Moore With Team’s Top Honors for 2009-10
Northwood High School honored its winter athletes for both their athletic and their academic accomplishments at the school’s awards ceremony on March 2.
In swimming and diving, the two individuals honored as most valuable performers were Chelsea Vanderweele and Austin Moore. Honored as the team’s unsung hero was Courtney Ulmer, while Jesse Macdonald was named the team’s most improved player.
Seven members of the team also were presented with the Minds in Motion Award for maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.25 during their season of competition. The recipients were Vanderweele, Liana Ventimiglia, Lara Skibbie, Morgan Kershner, Emma Kapstein-O’Brien, Lauren Gunnison and Thomas Carrington.
Coach Stephanie Sund passed out the awards following brief comments about the past season.
In his opening remarks, Principal Henry Johnson said he appreciated the efforts of parents and student-athletes during a winter season that was made much more challenging by severe snowfall that forced the cancellation of many practice sessions at Northwood and competitions home and away. Noting this represented Northwood’s sixth year of operation (and its fourth year with varsity teams) since reopening as a high school, Johnson said he could see a “strengthening over the years” of the athletic program.
Johnson, who has been Northwood’s principal since its start, said he especially enjoyed recognizing those students who excelled in the classroom at the same rime they were committing themselves to the rigors of athletic competition. He gave out the final honors of the night, the Scholar Athlete Award for compiling a perfect 4.0 average during the second marking period to three athletes: track participant Calvin Kane, basketball player Christine Saah and swimmer Liana Ventimiglia. – posted by jay p. goldman 3/2/10

Meet 5: Springbrook Defeats Gladiator Boys, Girls in Duals
Northwood boys and girls' swim teams dropped dual meets Saturday (Jan. 16) to host Springbrook HS at Martin Luther King Pool. The girls lost by 6 points, the boys by 20.
In 22 events each, the girls achieved 1st place in 7 events, 2nd in 2 events and 3rd in 5 events. The boys scored 1st place in 6 events, 2nd in 3 events, and 3rd in 3 events. But lack of depth hurt both teams.
The Gladiator aquatics squad wasn't able to enter a single diver and had only single entries in the relay events because of the small size of the roster, but the Gladiators pulled in enough top finishes in other events to stay close behind the Springbrook aquatics team in the midday confrontation.

Meet 1: Gladiators vs. Kennedy HS
The Northwood swimming and diving team opened its 2009-10 competition with a scrimmage against Kennedy HS on Saturday morning (Dec. 5) at the Germantown Swim Center.
Results were not immediately available but will be posted in the coming days.
The Gladiators have some excellent strokers, but like a year ago will suffer from lack of depth. During the 2008-09 season, the team often grabbed first places in dual meets but would go on to lose the meet because of a shortage of swimmers, especially in boys’ races. Scholastic swimming rules permit a participant to compete in just two individual races and one relay.
Stephanie Sund has returned as coach of the swimmers and divers. This is her fifth year at the helm of the aquatics squad, having started when Northwood enrolled only freshmen and sophomores.
The next meet for the Glad swim team is on Dec. 12 versus Springbrook and Paint Branch again at the Germantown Swim Center.– posted by jay p. goldman with reporting by Terry Hessler
