Scheuerman Vanishes

PORTLAND - (AP) - The favorites swing into action tonight in the final two games of the Far West Classic's opening round as Seattle meets California and Oregon State plays Idaho.

Fans were treated to the unusual in first-round games Wednesday night as Iowa nipped Arizon 57-56 and Oregon downed Washington State 67-57.

Iowa shot poorly, threw the ball way numerous times and found itself trailing by seven points with seven minutes remaining.

Then officials Bill Fouts of Walla Walla and Louis Soriano of Bremerton, kicked Iowa coach Sharm Scheuerman off the bench. They said that while he used no profanity, his constant neddling was too much.

Scheurman, who had been whistled for a technical foul after protesting a call in the first half, walked out of the Memorial Coliseum and vanished.

Even those close to the Iowa team did not know where he went.

But Iowa rallied, tied the score, then stole the ball in the final 40 seconds and won the game. Jimmy Rodgers led Iowa with 16 points, but sub Dave Roach made the crucial field goal with 33 seconds left.
