Knights, Wildcats Still One-Two in 'AA'

AROUND THE PILE - Jim Tienaara (40) of East drives around the reach of Larry Powell of Shelton for lay-in attempt during the host Knights 66-48 Olympic league class AA prep hoop win last night. Watching are Highclimber Bob Walker (left) and Knight Larry Beach (center) while Knight center Darryl Fry and two Shelton players try to get off the floor after a mass tumble. Win was East's ninth in 10 outings on the post-season path to "district" tourney of three Olympic peninsula teams and Seamount AA champion to earn single berth at state double-A tournament March 13-16 at Seattle.

Four quarters of mastery constructed a 66-43 Olympic league class AA conquest of the Shelton Highclimbers for the East Knights here last night.

Forward Mike Holen was at his best, popping in eight field goals in 14 attempts and adding a free throw for game individual high count of 17.

Jim Tienhaara added 12, Darryl Fry 11 and John Tracy 10 to make up a quartet of double figure Knights.

Leaders for Shelton were reserve Bill Smith with 12 and sophomore starting forward Larry Powell with 10.

THE KNIGHTS were nothing if not consistent. They scored 17 points in each of the first three quarters and fell just slightly below that in the last eight minutes when reserves were having a good but ragged time.

Shooting an even 40 per cent in the first and second periods on identical eight for 20 field efforts, the Knights were in front 34-25 at halftime and advanced the spread by 10 in the following eight minutes.

East was matching field goals to Shelton’s free throws at game’s start, building slowly. It was 6-5 with 3½ minutes gone when the Knights staged their first spurt. A free throw by Tienhara and field goals by Tracy and Holen boosted it to 13-5. It was apparent then that the ‘Climbers would not be able to match the Knights in shooting accuracy, speed or ball handling – and they couldn’t.

ALL 13 Knights got a chance to play, including Mike Dorman, the senior deep reserve who calls himself the “13th man.”

Dorman appearing for just the third time this season, was chief concern of the late going when the only persons eager about the outcome were the substitutes on the floor. Rooters were cheering for Dorman to score. The slender youngster dribbled well against the fighting ‘Climbers and put up a couple of high arching shots that could have given him his first points of the season. Unfortunately, they missed although one bounced off the rim, a real near thing.

For the game, East sank 28 of 73 goal tries, 38.4 per cent, to Shelton’s 15 of 46, 32.6 per cent.

Free throwing, Knights were surprisingly unsuccessful, garnering just 10 of 25 for 40 percent. Shelton claimed 13 points in 24 chances at the charity strip.

TRIUMPH was East’s ninth in 10 outings on the class AA tournament trail, keeping the Knights just one game off the pace of the unbeaten West Wildcats that they host next Friday.  West was East’s lone conqueror in the post-season path.

Shelton host Central Kitsap tonight in another double-A Olympic league tilt.

West Five Overcomes SK, 45-30

By JOE SHERK

Sun Sports Writer

Excellent free throw shooting by West’s Wildcats paved the way to a 45-30 class AA basketball victory over South Kitsap’s Wolves in Port Orchard last night.

The leaders in the district double A chase pushed through 21 charity tosses in 24 attempts on the way to their 10th straight triumph on the tourney trail. Wolves remained in possible contention for the third spot in the playoffs for entry to the state tourney although they now stand 3-6 in AA competition.

FREG KEGEL and Dan Shedwin split 15 points between them from the foul line, Burley Kegel tallied only seven points but they were all from the charity stripe. Shedwin popped the cords eight times for one pointers and finished the rugged contest with 14 points, enough to lead both squads.

WHAT NEXT? - Les Dicks looks toward Dan Shedwin (21) along the baseline to see if he is open for a pass as South Kitsap players converge during second half play as SK last night. Dicks and Shedwin were the top scorers for the Wildcats of West as they tallied 11 and 14 respectively. Trying to get the ball away from Dicks are SK's Jerry Kenoyer (reaching) Rick Piercy (behind Dicks), while Wolf Tom Erickson (42) looks on and Dennis Leith watches another 'Cat. West won it 10th straight in AA tourney trail play.

A strong start pushed West to a 10-2 first quarter advantage as the Wolves, content to work the ball for a good shot over the shifting ‘Cat zone defense, took but four attempts from the floor during the initial eight minutes, the first coming after 2:19 had elapsed in the quarter. Sophomore forward Dennis Leith’s short jumper with 47 seconds showing was the only score of the stanza for the hosts.

The ‘Cats maintained their margin in the second period – taking a 22-15 lead into the dressing room at halftime – but receiving a strong threat from the Wolves in the third quarter.

SK CAME OUT fired up, and four points by sophomore guards Bob Knox cut the difference to three points. But that was all the closer the Wolves were to come as the referee’s whistle seemed to demoralize them.

Guard Errol Darling was given the heave-ho after forcibly trying to gain the third spot on the foul line from ‘Cat Dick Wright. At the time Shedwin was shooting and while one official made the technical call on darling the other let Shedwin shoot. He missed it but got a reprieve and shot it again as time was declared out. He made good the second time around and little Lonnie Folger, starting in place of Leon Leslie and coming through with a good effort, swished the technical shot.

Wright added another free throw and Les Dicks two before West scored its first field goal of the panel with 3:11 showing.

DICKS WAS runner-up to Shedwin in the scoring with 11. Dicks, Shedwin and Kegel were the only ‘Cats to miss at the foul line, and also the only ones to make more than one appearance.

Coach Bob Smith’s squad took only seven shot from the floor in the second half and four of those were in the third quarter. West was at the charity stripe so much it didn’t need to try for the two pointers.  It closed the fray with six straight one pointers.

While the visitors were having good luck with the foul line SK wasn’t. The forces of mentor Orv Anderson toed the line 19 times and could make but eight.

Knox was high for the Wolves with eight points.

Anderson started a five composed of three sophomores and two seniors and was pleased with their attempts.

LESLIE DIDN’T suit up for disciplinary reasons and was hardly missed as Folger turned in his good performance. The fray also marked the return of guard Steve Schumacher. He had been on the shelf with a dislocated knee for almost two weeks. The knee was in a brace but Schumacher showed no ill effects.

Both quints attempted the same number of shots from the floor, 31, but the victors hit one more than losers. West meshed 12 of 31 for 38.7 per cent and SK hit 11 of 31, a 35.4 percentage.

Junior varsity contest proved to be a real thriller as the West jayvees captured a 34-32 win on a last second shot by Greg Gran.

WITH THE SCORE tied and 1:20 to play, baby ‘Cats stalled for the final shot which Gran took with three seconds showing. The ball hit the back of the hoop and bounced high, then came down directly through the net.

West will rest until Friday when it defends the top spot in the district tourney play, tangling with cross-town rival East Knights. East’s only loss in AA competition was dealt by the ‘Cats.

SK travels to Bainbridge for a return encounter with the Spartans Tuesday.

FIRST TWO - Sophomore forward Dennis Leith cuts loose with a short jumper to score South Kitsap's first two points with 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter of action last night at Port Orchard. Attempting to deflect the ball are West Wildcats Lonnie Folger (24) and J.D. Tamerius. Running to get into possible rebound position is SK's Tom Erickson (42). West won the double-A encouter, 45-30.

THAT NOW FAMILIAR SIGHT - These days, it's becoming increasingly more common to see contact lens hunters on basketball floors and such a seach took place last night as East high school after Knight Darryl Fry (44) had one of his pop out. Remaining erect with Fry were Shelton's Larry Powell (33) and Jim Goodpaster (53) and referee Lindell Brown, while East coach Les Eathorne, Knight Larry Beach and Highclimbers Bob Walker and Mike Carte kelt for closer scrutiny. After a look of 30 seconds or so, Fry found the lens under his eyelid.
