Alaska Firebirds Girls Hockey Association
The Alaska Firebirds Hockey Association was founded in November 1990 to provide girls with the opportunity to continue to play competitive hockey after the Squirt level and qualify for scholarships and opportunities to play comp hockey at the collegiate level. The original founders of the program were Gary Miller and Sig Jokiel. Prior to the Firebirds program, very few female players had opportunities to compete at the PeeWee and above levels. The Firebirds program initially provided opportunities to girls at the U19 and U15 levels. Over the years, the program has expanded to include teams at the U19, U15, U12, and U10 and U8 age groups. This year over 115 girls participated in the program. The Alaska Firebirds is a not-for-profit organization that is governed by a volunteer board of directors. Board Officers are elected on an annual basis by the membership at large and serve staggered two year terms. The Association is officially sanctioned by USA Hockey and the Alaska State Hockey Association. The backbone of the organization is the volunteers who generously give their time and talents to ensure the viability and success of the program. The board, team officers, and committee members all serve on a volunteer basis. Coaches volunteer their time or work for minimal compensation. We look forward to the ongoing growth and success of the program as interest in girls and women's hockey continues to grow nationally and locally and new opportunities to play comp hockey at all levels are made available to our daughters.
