AV Lady Dons undefeated at Washington Tournament

Washington Tourney Champions
Match 1 vs Mission:

The first set started off with multiple dig-set combination's by Shannon Butler-Cassie Carino allowing the Dons to take an 11-6 lead (which included a nice hustling save by Carino, resulting in Mission calling their first timeout). Mission attempted to stage a comeback, but the girls grew the lead with kills by Emily Diggins and Jessica Averill, and a block by Becca Wolfinger. Rachel Cilk served two aces to end the game at 25-13.

The second set started with a kill by Laura Zollars (with a diving dig by Butler, and perfect set by Carino), with Amador continuing to lead with multiple nice digs by Nicolle Woo, and a hard kill by Tara Shreve. The set ended (Woo serving) with two-in-a-row dig(Shreve)-set(Emilie Kapp)-point(Averill) combos for a score of 25-14.

Match 2 vs Lincoln:

Set one began with Meghan Burnett executing multiple kills being set by Kapp, a perfectly placed tip shot by Shreve, and hard shot to the corner by Averill, as the Dons went on to win 25-10.

The momentum continued in the second set, with Carino continuing to serve up efficient sets, allowing for multiple points, including kills by Shreve, Zollars, Burnett and Averill. The opponent attempted to shift their defense to stop the multiple aces served by the Amador girls, but to no avail, as they went on to win 25-8.

Match 3 vs Hogan:

Winning this match would guarantee a spot in the Gold Division Bracket. The first set, both Carino and Woo served for 9 straight points, with Diggins executing a kill for the set 1 win.

Set 2, with Woo serving, Shreve executed a nice cross-court kill, and Averill serving up an ace for the final point, for the Match win, 25-3, 25-8.

Match 4 vs Foothill (Gold Division Semi-Final):

Anticipation was high, as the Dons were facing their cross-town rivals, with the winner going on to the Championship match. Cilk started things off with 2 kills, a dink, and two serving ace’s, as Amador took an early 6-2 lead, with the lead growing to 11-5, after Kapp set Burnett for the kill. Foothill then fought back to tie the score at 14-14. Wolfinger placed a tip past the foothill defense, and Butler hustled for a big save, which Amador put away for the point, to keep the Dons in the game at 19-19. After Burnett served for two points, Foothill called a time-out. However, this did not faze the girls, as Diggins scored a point, Cilk with a kill, and Wolfinger placing a dink shot for the winner at 25-22.

Set two started with a Wolfinger block, a nice shot down the line by Butler and a set by Kapp to Burnett for the kill, however Foothill took the early lead at 7-4. This time it was Amador who fought back to even the score, with again both teams playing hard, as the lead was alternating up to a score of 18-18. Again, the girls dug deep, starting with a kill, then ace by Zollars, Butler-Kapp-Diggins point, a great save over the back by Burnett, and finally a Cilk dink for the win at 25-22.

Match 5 vs Cal(Tournament Championship Game):

The parents brought out the rally caps, as this match was sure to be an exciting, nail-biting experience. Cal scored the first two points, but nice dink shots by Cilk and Zollars tied the score. After a huge block by Diggins, the Dons took the lead, but just like the
Foothill game, the opponent was tough and fought back to tie the game at 10-10. Cal then ran off some points to take the lead by 5. A dig(Butler)-set(Kapp)-point(Wolfinger) combination started the comeback, with a kill by Diggins getting the scored tied at 18-18.
Zollars served for seven straight points (including 3 aces, and Burnett-set-Burnett combo to regain the momentum) which lead into Amador going on to a 25-21 first set win.

Set two started off innocently with both teams executing awesome shots, with Amador getting kills by Wolfinger, and Cilk. But Cal got on a hot streak, taking the lead at 21-12. All indications pointed to a third set to determine the winner, but then Zollars started
a serving streak with eight straight points (two included kills by Averill and Diggins). Cal called a timeout, but it was too late to stop the Amador train, as Kapp executed 8 great sets, Butler coming up with some timely saves, with the last point scored by Cilk for the set winner at 26-24.

Congrats to Coach Aaron and the JV Lady Dons for bringing home the first place trophy!
