Blues Spilt On Michigan Trip Eric Nelson - 11/3/2008 A famous coach once said " if you can spilt on the road and win at home you'll have a shot at a championship" The Madison Blues Hockey Team did just that in 2 hard fought games against the Yupers , deep in the heart of the U.P. The Blues loaded the bus at 8:30 am and were on the road for 8 hours prior to lining up against the Portage Lake Pioneers in Houghton, Michigan. The Blues traveling with 13 skaters and 2 goalies they fielded 2 forward lines, and 4 defense with a couple subs filling in, they knew that the freshness of their legs could be a factor. The Pioneers got the scoring started, and had the edge on the ice the first two periods, holding a 3 goal lead going into the final period. In the third period, the Blues came alive as they got there second wind and a stout talking to by coach Pete Goeser. With a renewed quest, the Blues put on a spectacular display of offense, scoring 2 goals and putting 21 shots on net. The Pioneer goalie had the period of his life as he stopped 19 shots with a " highlight reel" of his own. In the final talley it was Pioneers 6 the Madison Blues 5 . Sunday morning in Houghton as the Blues were loading the bus, the weather had changed, instead of sunny and warm, it was cloudy, windy and cold. The Blues hoped the change in the weather also meant a changed in fortune on the ice as they headed for Calumet and for their matinee game against the Wolverines. The change was there, as they dominated the Wolverines and got the split they needed winning 9-3. Alex Westcott got his first start for the Madison Blues and the win, stopping 28 shots along the way. " I felt pretty good in the net, and the my team came through with 9 goals which takes the pressure off me" said Westcott a former Madison Edgewood all conference player. MItch Kerns led the way for the Blues shaking off the cold and scoring 4 goals.Credit is also due the defense, as they tightend up their game also from Saturday night. |
