Playoff Implications & Bragging Rights 9/21/2009Last season the Hamilton Hurricanes re-entered the Ontario Football Conference after being away some 13 years. They had not played a game in any other league either. Their first four games were all loses but they re-grouped and won their final four games to claim fourth place and a playoff game. Enter the Ottawa Sooners after a similar absence from the OFC. The Sooners however have played in another league all along. A difference, you bet. Ottawa has won their first four games.
Ottawa fought hard for a 17-7 victory over the visiting London Beefeaters who are now 1-3 on the season. In Hamilton the Hurricanes, now 3-1, hung on for a 22-20 victory over the 1-3 Windsor AKO Fratmen. The Burlington Braves, 0-4, travelled to St Leonard but came away on the short end of a 23-15 victory by the Cougars now 3-1.
Coming up this weekend will see the second half of the battle of the bay between the Hamilton Hurricanes and the Braves at Burlington’s Nelson Stadium Saturday night at 7:00 pm. The Canes won round one 31-15 at home. The battle of 1-3 teams also takes place Saturday night at 7:00 pm. The Windsor AKO Fratmen host the London Beefeaters at Windsor Stadium.
A rare Sunday night tilt will take place at Keith Harris Stadium in Ottawa at 7:30 pm. The St Leonard Cougars will be looking for revenge of the Sooners 16-13 last minute victory in St Leonard two weeks ago and of course a share of first place.
The OFC will host the Prairie Football Conference champs in the Intergold Cup (CJFL semi final) with the winner advancing to the Canadian Bowl Saturday November 14th at the home of the British Columbia Football Conference champions. |
