Established in 1985, the Cortland Club Hockey team is one of the longest running clubs at SUNY Cortland. A student run organization, the Cortland Club Hockey team gives qualified hockey players the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level. Until the 2007-2008 season, the Red Dragons were members of the NYCHL (New York Collegiate Hockey League) which consisted of teams from all over the state of New York. From the beginning of the 2004 season, the team has tallied a record of 40-16-3, which consists of an NYCHL Championship in the 05-06 season and a birth in the title game the following season.

In 2007-2008 the team begins a new era as they become a Division 1 team in the ACHA (American Collegiate Hockey Association) as well as one of the original teams in a new conference known as the NECHL (Northeast Collegiate Hockey League). Teams included in the NECHL consist of Rutgers University, Penn State University, Binghamton University, St. Bonaventure University, Ithaca College, Oswego State and lastly Cornell University. Syracuse University is a possible candidate for expansion.
