Founded in the 1960s, the University of Colorado Rugby Team has become one of the nations most successful teams in the collegiate arena. Over the years the club has accrued a great deal of success, most notably within the last few years. Since 2006 under the leadership of Coach Sean Edris, the team has won multiple Western Rugby Union Championships as well as making repeated trips to the Collegiate Sweet 16 tournament. In 2008, the club had one of its most successful seasons to date. On the year the club went 15-3, and made a trip to the Big Four Tournament (Collegiate Rugby's Equivalent to the Final Four) to play eventual finalist BYU. The club has additionally produced numerous All- Americans as well as members of the United States Select teams that have gone on to play other international teams. Within the last two years, Dan Murphy, Maximo DeAchaval, and senior Tommy Pasque have been honored with the title All-American for their play on the pitch.

Most recently, CU Rugby has been very competitive in the Fall ’09 season. After a lackluster spring showing the Buffs got back in the swing of things and turned up the heat. The team was unstoppable in league play boasting an undefeated, first place record in the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union, which will prove to be a crucial first step in getting to the Sweet Sixteen and continuing on past years’ successes in national tournaments. In addition to an incredible league record, the Buffs showed that they could hang with the big boys. Most notably, a hard fought 41-38 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers, one of the best clubs in the Southern Rugby Football Union. The Buffs currently hold #9 and #12 rankings on RugbyMag.com and AmericanRugbyNews.com respectively and have shown that they can be a top national contender. The recent success has given the Buffs a reinvigorated spirit that will hopefully carry them to a top finish in the National Championship in the Spring ’10 season.
