Mojos sound off about their experience in Sidney, BC.

This is an historical moment for the Mojos.  I haven’t received one email from anyone since we returned from Sydney.  I assume most of you are still recovering from the fantastic trip.  Chris and I had a wonderful time, and we want to thank everyone for their assistance in helping Chris get around so she could “fully participate” in all the events.  Thanks to Rick, Rock and Richard for all the work in putting this great adventure together…onto Snohomish!

Mon 4/07/08 5:23 PM  James Latham

Speaking just for myself, I am still in awe of what a fantastic event this was.  And, having a small knowledge of herding cats and goat rodeos, I can only imagine the sheer effort that went into the organizing, scheduling, and pulling off the set of events in such a seamless and absolutely fun fashion.  From the moment I arrived in Victoria I was continuously amazed at the unfolding of the spectacle.  Thanks to all Mojos for including me in this very special group (some more special than others).  I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of watching Mojos 1 and O40 games, plus the honor of playing with the gifted Mojos 2.  And every off-field event was even more fun than the last.  I am already looking forward to our next opportunity to get together, share a beer, and play a game.  Hope everyone recovers from the minor and the major injuries rapidly.  See you all soon!

Thanks to Jim Chan and Rock for transporting my large musical instruments.  Thanks to Scott Denis and Sam Imperati for transporting me.

Dear MOJOs and The Enablers,
Amy is still dating me and thanked me for taking her – I think that says most of it.  I’ll only add, I REALLY appreciate that you kept the worst of the Sam stories from her!

A huge thanks to the organizers!!!

Mon 4/07/08 6:14 PM  Glenn Fithian-Barrett
I am finally home and am lifting a pint (of Pittock, of course!) to the MOJOS!  Congratulations to another phenomenal event!  Once Lisa gets home from work I'll have her take a picture of MY shiner that will rival Randy's from Hawaii.  And I know most of you thought my nose was impressive BEFORE, you'll need to see it now that it's broken and swollen!

Sam, if I'm praising the JuJu, does that mean I can't claim to be Atheist any longer?!  And what makes you think we kept the "worst of the Sam stories from her"?

Mon 4/07/08 6:26 PM  Sam Imperati
Glen, One of the MANY reasons I like you is because you are one of the few people I know with a nose bigger than mine.  You, like me, could be a nose tissue donor.  Have you noted that on your driver’s license?

I know you kept the worst stories from Amy because she is still dating me.

Mon 4/07/08 8:17 PM  Gary J Hagstrom

I had a great time and really enjoyed all the events. I want to put in my thanks to Rock, Rick , Richard and all the others who put in all the time to make these trips so memorable. Looking forward to the next adventure !

Mon 4/07/08 8:37 PM  Jim Chan
Okay, Donna and I (she doesn’t know I’m speaking for her so keep it on the down low) will throw in our two cents worth.  We had a great time, it wasn’t quite as warm as Hawaii, our first Mojo adventure, but it was just as much fun, maybe even more for me this time because I love playing music.  Donna was a little jealous that Sam sat on my lap and not hers but I totally understand why.  I am also looking forward to the next event, maybe we’ll learn some more songs.  Donna says we need some more upbeat stuff so we don’t put people to sleep.  Don’t forget, spring league starts this Sunday!

Mon 4/07/08 9:28 PM  Peter Badovinatz
Sam,
And so long as that check made out to "Mojo's Party Fund" arrives on time each month, we'll continue to NOT tell Amy "those" Sam stories.  Perhaps automatic withdrawal to avoid you missing the mailman or not having a stamp handy...

And, I'll add in my thanks for a great time!  One of these days I'll not fly in from far away to one of these, but at least I could be there.

And a big up to Rock and Rick and Dave and the other 'ringleaders' for going above and beyond the call of duty.  I'd like to give a big THANK YOU to ya'll.

P.S. Glenn, relax, take a couple of days off work.  You've earned it.

1st rated...  It was "1derful"!

MOJOS #2 - you're #1.

MOJOs you're #1.

Mon 4/07/08 10:01 PM  Chris P O’Neill
As a member of one of the Over40 [former virgin] Mojos, I'd like to extend our appreciation for the great effort that went into organizing this past weekend's events and for the terrific welcome you all gave us.  We had a great time and are ready for more.  And a shoutout to Jim for his tremdous play over 8 games!  Unfortunately I'm not sure we'll ever be able to talk Glen into playing for us again.  Then again, he knows better than to try to face us and beat Mike on a header.

Mon 4/07/08 10:33 PM  Coles Family
Once again, this Mojos trip was a fantastic experience. It is amazing to travel with +70 people and still feel like we were a “family”. We can’t give enough thanks to the efforts of the Mojos’ board, the “coaches”, the bottomless energy of Rick and Rock to pull this type of event together, and all the Mojos for being a great group of people to be associated with. We certainly returned with more good friends than when we arrived.

Jim Chan gets the Iron Man award for playing 8 games in two days (four in a row on Sunday), as well as his energy in the two Mojos Band Jams (a great addition to the experience).

Chris Sokol gets the Enabler “Trooper” award for participating in all the events (only days out of surgery). It was a good thing that the TSA checkpoints were not at the border crossings or her leg would have set off all the metal detectors.

We’re looking forward to Snohomish and even more new converts to the JuJu Way of Life.

Mon 4/07/08 10:35 PM  Coles Family
Really, Sam, did you ever think that she may still be dating you because she likes us? Besides it will take quite a bit of time to fill her in on all the “Sam” stories due to the shear volume of them.

By the way she is welcome at Mojo events even if she isn’t dating you. We enjoyed her company.

Mon 4/07/08 10:40 PM  Glenn Fithian-Barrett
Sam, I had to get a special endorsement on my license for MY nose tissue donation!  I might have to get it modified with my new "enhancements" from this weekend, as shown in the attachment!

Oh, and by the way, you obviously weren't listening when I emphasized that we were a 2-n squared club -- BOTH Glenns have 2 n's.  Come on, get it straight!

Mon 4/07/08 10:40 PM  Paul Kruse
“Oh Canada”

Here we are again.  70 plus immigrants into friendly soccer territory

4 ½ hrs. driving, 1 ½ hours floating, for some 1 ½ hours changing tire,  for others better get new GPS that avoids nails.

7 hours drinking, or 8 or 9 or 10. Sliding down Oysters,  Tent Party and Karaoke.

4-5 hours sleeping, and now we try to “Kick It”.

1st 60 minutes not so bad, Drink some beer, 2nd 60 minutes still not too bad. Drink some more beer.

Take 10 minutes off for good behavior (My Bad), Samu and Shamu offsides, Richard Scores,

James scores twice, Roddy rebounds off the keeper and puts it away.

Team 1 player takes 10 minute seat in corner with dunce cap.

All teams ready for “My Big Fat Greek Soccer Club” dinner.  More drinks and exquisite meal,  The Mojo’s own band, The Band Jo’s.  More drinks,  for some less sleep.

8:30 AM on the Pitch and by 9:30 the bodies might be loosening up.

9:45 is a double header.

11:00 brings another mud bowl and 12:15 wraps up the games for another year.

Broken noses, torn ham strings, bulging calves, twisted knees, aching backs.

Wonderful memories.  Great fans, wonderful “Enablers.”

Final Score – 12 games played, 12 games won by somebody.  Who cares.

Goals Scored – As many as went into the net.

Great to have O-40’s team join the club.

We sum it up as great fun.  Trip to ferry 30 minutes.  Waiting in line 90 minutes.

1 ½ hours floating, Buffet dinner on board ship, Bribing customs officials to let you back in without a passport. Fully dressed in soccer uniform please prove that you came to Canada to play in a soccer tournament. 4 ½ hours driving.  Welcome home.

Now will there be any healthy bodies to begin Spring season in a week?

The pictures will reveal the story. Should it be told or shoudn’t it.  With this group you can’t escape the story.  It travels the Internet quickly.  And it gets embellished as it goes.

Another MOJO Saga begins.

Thank you to all for participating and especially all of you who planned such an enjoyable trip.  “Let the MO JO GRO”

Yes!  The YouTube is coming....but here are a few 'snaps'.  Paul Kruse
did a wonderful literary recap!  And the Bandjos?  I hadn't heard it
before but it rocks.

Rock, Rick, Scott, Richard----y'all made it a legendary experience.
As did each and every person who came.

Mon 4/07/08 11:32 PM  Brian Gaffney
Another note of thanks for all of those who put in the time and effort to pull this together. The whole trip was flawless and that does not happen without a ton of preparation. I (most all probably) have not suffered that much pain in a long time but now 24 hours plus later the pain has mostly faded and all that will be left will be fond memories.

Tue 4/08/08 7:14 AM  Jim Chan
And I was standing right next to him when it happened.  Could I have prevented it?  I guess I’ll always live with that guilt.

Mojo's

Thanks for a great time

Thanks for all your hard work to make this event great. ( I had no idea that you all were so talented!)

Anne and I had a fantastic time"

Tue 4/08/08 11:13 AM  Glenn Siegel
And let me also add my Thanks for allowing me the privilege of joining your Mojo-astic foray into the great Canadian tundra.  I had an great time both on and off the field.  And apparently Customs missed the "Super Duper Secret Compartment" so there was an anonymous donation to a Secret Slightly Off Kilter Scientific Lab in the Lava Tubes under Mt. Tabor of a large quantity of freshly caught Canadian Lemmings, although a couple of gerbils and one rogue Hamster apparently were caught at the same time, but we have absolutely no idea where they could have possibly come from, Senator, why do you ask?

It was great fun, although I'm sure Glenn would have preferred not to have his nose slightly mushed, so Thank you all for including me!

Tue 4/08/08 1:12 PM  Coles Family
Since you were in Sydney, AU, are you sure they are Canadian Lemmings and not really “Aussies” in disguise? Did you check their “papers” thoroughly to make sure that there were no forgeries? The gerbils, and even the rogue hamster, are probably legit (something about the eyes), but you really have to check up on the lemmings. All it takes is one of them to decide to forge his papers and the rest just tend to follow suit. And they can be led astray so easily. You know it will throw off of your scientific studies if the info is incorrect, EH!

And, since you didn’t actually purchase them, are you required to declare their presence to customs? It isn’t as if you plan to sell them on the Black Market, right? The Animal Rights people really frown on that sort of thing. Come to think of it, they also tend to frown on the types of activities that may be going on in the Secret Slightly Off Kilter Lab in the Lava Tubes under Mt Tabor. You better keep an eye out for demonstrators and infiltrators or you might find yourself in front of that Senator after all.

Tue 4/08/08 2:46 PM  Glenn Siegel
According to the Mad Evil Geniuses, oops, I mean the Enthusiastic Scientific Endeavorers at the Lab, they are decidedly Canadian Lemmings.  First of, they initially were smuggled in a Secret Compartment, until they all agreed the accommodations were "Really Super Duper, Eh." making it a Super Duper Secret Compartment.  Plus, they all agreed to tell Customs that they were just going for a brief visit to the US.  As one of them said, "It's not like they are going to show us pictures of some half naked guy that will cause us to sudden have the burning desire to throw ourselves off the nearest cliff, eh.  That would be like totally Un Super Duper, you hosers."

And the other determining factor was that they all drank large quantities of Kokanie and then passed out.  According to research, that only happens to Canadians.  Everybody else just wonders when they will be served actual beer, instead of the placebo.

The best part of the Slightly off Kilter now Super Duper Secret Lab is that any protesters will be flashed by a Picture of Rock, which apparently is enough to send them running into the woods yelling "Save Sasquatch from further Exploitation!!"  So it all works out in the end.  And the Lab has just hired a guy whose name tag says "O. North" to be the Head of Shredding department.  So there should be no problems before any governmental nincompoops, I mean Subcommittees on clandestine subterranean experimental labs run by mad evil geniuses, I mean enthusiastic Scientific investigationary endeavorers.

whoa....lemmings are making my head hurt.

Tue 4/08/08 9:33 PM  Richard Fay
Mary and I returned home this evening. Thank You to all the organizers, players, wives, and significant others for the wonderful soccer, social and musical experiences.

It is remarkably refreshing that so many people from difference backgrounds can get together and enjoy themselves with sport, music, conversation and humor. An Olympic type moment!

Although barely walking, Mary and I toured Buchart Gardens Monday, then stayed in the Downtowner Hotel again in Port Angeles. They were thrilled we returned and gave us the discounted rate. I told them the Mojo's were very pleased with their accommodations. After cheering Mary's Kansas JayHawks to victory, we returned to Michaels for dinner. They too were thrilled we returned with several comments of "...You people certainly know how to party!" and "...You were really having a great time in the back room!".  A legend in the making! We assured them we all had a great time and thanked them again for hosting us.

Snohomish Ho!

Wed 4/09/08 1:57 AM  Sam Imperati
Richard, Don’t you dare talk about our “Snohomish Ho” in front of Amy!

Wed 4/09/08 6:36 AM  Rick McCoy
I hope that everyone is finally recovering after 4 hard fought games.  Jim Chan 8 games!  I could barely walk the next day after returning home.  However, the results were outstanding and well worth the pain and effort put out.

A special mention to the O40 team... all of you did the Mojo's proud... great job!

I have been reading the responses to everyone's Sidney experience and it truly brings great joy to hear that everyone had a good time.  I think that I can speak for the organizers as we literally see unfolding before our eyes the vision of building a community of soccer players, wives and significant others interested in travel and soccer.  Not to mention perhaps indoctrinating the next generation of Mojo's.

What's interesting is that after every tournament Mojo organizers always are thinking how are we ever going to top this one.  We'll for me the answer to the question was revealed during this tournament and quite frankly it has always been under our noses the whole time.

IT'S THE PEOPLE!  That's right it's all of you and not the events that make every tournament truly special.  No matter where we go it's a PARTY!  The common response we receive from other tournament organizers and establishments are always the same.... The Mojo's know how to have a great time.  We always leave a warm and friendly impression no matter where we go or what we do.

We are in the process of planning our post Sidney tournament party hosted by Ray and Penny Holmgren. Details to follow soon.

So, again thanks to everyone for attending.  We will be making an announcement in regards to the upcoming July Snohomish tournament probably within a week so keep an eye out as we are expecting another great turnout.

Wed 4/09/08 8:03 AM  Dean Jones

Thank you for all your work organizing the trip and activities and allowing the 040's to join in!!! Kelly and I had a wonderful time and we're looking forward to the next time we can join the Mojo's on a trip! I still have a lot to learn from the Mojo's but one thing I did learn is.......staying at the Beer tent until 2 in the morning on Friday night, makes it hard to play soccer on Saturday. Next time we'll only stay until midnight:)

Wed 4/09/08 9:08 AM  Richard Fay
Sammy, Sammy, Sammy!

How quickly you've regressed. Your mind is, once again, Imus Guttural.

And you were doing so well for a few short days: Ho!...the French translation is Honorablement Obscurantisme...is a circa mid-to-late 1800's wagon train euphemism used by wagon masters to calm the masses as they crossed the hostile plains and rugged mountain passes. The same concept could be applied to Snohomish, as we embark on yet another Mojo adventure.

Note to Amy: We'll work with you Amy. We have had extensive experience. Your Purple Heart is forthcoming.

Wed 4/09/08 9:16 AM  John Mayfield
Just to add to what everyone has already said.....Thanks to Rick, Rock, coaches, David & Mary for the host room, all the organizers, the JuJu who finally made it to our event, ( may have attributed to our success on the field), the Mojo's band for letting me join the fun, and especially my teammates on Mojo 1. Everything was so well organized, the roast lamb was outta this world (although I'm signed up for an esophagus transplant after drinking the Greek moonshine, burned clean thru), and the company of crazies known as the Mojos and their enablers. What a paahdy, as they'd say in New Orleans, and they might also say, "WHO DAT GONNA BEAT DEM MOJOS!!

Wed 4/09/08 9:17 AM  Coles Family
Well stated, Rick. I agree that it is the people who attend these events who make it special. However, thanks must, again, be given to all of you who made it possible for all “these great people” to manage to end up in the same (right) place at the same (right) time. So I lift a pint to the board for making these trips a wonderful experience.

And for the record, I had no pain issues after this trip, (not even after walking to the field on Sunday!) so my sympathies and well-wishes go out to all of you who do, to have a speedy and uneventful recovery. Especially you, Glenn (with 2 “n’s” J)!! Strains, sprains and pulls (while painful) seem to be par for the course, but a broken nose is above and beyond.

Wed 4/09/08 10:17 AM  Scott Denis
Well, Marty and I just returned from BC.  Not only did I have a great time, she is already excited about Snohomish.....Thanks not only to all those involved with the coordination and organization, but to all who went.  The soccer, camaraderie, old friends, new friends, and memories are what it is all about.

Wed 4/09/08 4:44 PM  Rock Courter

I’m glad to read that everyone appears to have enjoyed themselves.  That in itself makes all the work that goes into the planning and execution of these events all worthwhile.

First I would like to thank Suzzanne for putting up with the bass, which truly made getting into and out of the van an exhibit a contortionist would admire and from my vantage point fun to watch!  Also, being the only female in a van full of testosterone during the 600 mile round trip should be worthy of a ‘medal of honor’ especially after our stogie smoke-out waiting to board the ferry on our return trip (good thing Richard wasn’t along to ‘toot’ his horn).  I would also like to thank my passengers for putting up with my driving and in particular my constant droning on our return to keep myself alert (ok awake).  John Mayfield did a great job as my co-pilot keeping me engaged in conversation (what did we talk about?).

I would like to thank Sam for always taking me were I’ve never been before, Amy good luck you certainly have your hands full with this lad.  . . . don’t even say it Sam!  We all know it isn’t true.

Thanks to David and Mary for hosting this motley crew in a room that should have been at least twice it’s size.  And I would like to apologize to those that approached me Friday regarding gear only to hear the store was closed (I have to have some time off).

A big thanks to the 2-n squared club for their astute observations and assistance at the tent party (I was certainly making good use of my time off)!  Hey, someone said I was still able to find the van in the dark.  Hope I wasn’t too much trouble.

A BIG THANK-YOU to (in no particular order):

  • All the guys for hauling their instruments up and providing music for us
  • Michael’s Devine Dining and Theo’s staff for a seamless dinner experience
  • The Peninsula Sports Traders Soccer Club for another great tournament
  • The Over 40 team for joining us (hopefully more will follow)
  • Our ENABLERS, for as Joanne ‘kindly’ pointed out (only as our Jersey girl can) that without them we wouldn’t be, where ever we are
  • Our coaches, Scott Denis, Alex Guletski, and Mike Calder
  • Our trainer, Chris Sokol for going above and beyond the call to be with us
  • My fellow organizers, Rick McCoy, Jan Sokol, Richard Fay, Scott Denis, and David Porter
  • Brandon and Tanner McCoy for hanging out with us (actually they really came for the beer and stogies . . . and maybe the Canadian women players that were MIA this year)
  • Each and everyone one of you Mojo Warriors who stepped onto the pitch
  • Kelly Jones and John Mayfield for your special efforts at the tent party
  • Paul Kruse’s buffet on the return ferry ride (great idea)
  • And lastly and most importantly Paul Gunderson for being my room mate on this trip (enough said) and for assisting with our mobility challenged Chris

Next stop is Snohomish in July.  Until then I will look for you on the pitch here at home!

Wed 4/09/08 7:32 PM  Bill White
Thanks for the great trip!!  The play, dinner and hotel were great.  Thanks
