Park City Haggis had all it could handle in Belmont Shore, but the Haggis, led by the power running of Naki Angilau, held on to win their first Pacific Coast Playoff Match 41-33 in a match played at Murray Park this past Saturday. Park City will now travel to Las Vegas this weekend to play the highly touted and once defeated Las Vegas Blackjacks as the 6-2 Haggis continues its quest to reach the Division I Club Championship Sweet Sixteen.
Park City scored a try 30 seconds into the contest as Angilau scored at the end of a beautiful 80 meter movement in which a number of Haggis’ players touched the ball. Ryan Fletcher’s conversion made it 7-0. Ryan Dunyon scored a try in the corner and Park City’s forwards got another off a goal line ruck as the Haggis built a 17-3 lead 25 minutes into the contest. But an intercepted pass led to a Belmont Shore try and conversion and then a 40-meter penalty kick left the half with Park City holding a 17-13 lead.
Early in the second half Belmont Shore took the lead 18-17 on a 50-meter run through several tackles following a great dummy. This score held until fifteen minutes into the half when Haggis made some substitutes to get fresh players into the match and Naki Angilau took over.
The big Number 8 took the ball 20 meters for a try following a free kick to regain the lead and Fletcher’s kick made it 24-18 Haggis. Angilau then bulled in from 2 meters out for a try and what looked like a solid 29-18 lead. But Belmont Shore came right back scoring a try and a penalty goal to cut the lead to 29-26.
With seven minutes to play Joe Lomu made a strong run and passed off to Efi Fekitoa for a try and a 34-26 Park City lead. Belmont Shore retaliated with three minutes to go, scoring a try off a series of goal line rucks and mauls. The conversion made it 34-33 Haggis. The match ended with Angilau’s third try of the contest, a bruising 3-meter run through three tacklers. Fletcher’s conversion made the final score 41-33.
Haggis competes in Region 1 which includes the Pacific Coast and Southern California Unions. The top four team from the each union play two games against teams from the other union, with the top five teams advancing to the Round of 16 based on a point system. Haggis received four points for the win, also scoring a valuable bonus point for scoring over four tries.
In other action in the region, Olympic Club dominated Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (San Diego) 73-10. They remain the team to beat, and appear to be firing on all cylinders.
Los Angeles won the only game for Southern California, shutting out Belmont Shore 36-0 at home.
Hayward overcame Las Vegas in the end stages of the game, winning 15-8. Haggis plays Las Vegas at home next Saturday.
