Dodger Season Comes to an End Paul Welker - 8/5/2008The Hornell Dodgers once again couldn't solve the Brockport Riverbats and fell 7-4 in Game 2 of the Western Division Championship series. The Riverbats advance to their first ever NYCBL Championship series with the sweep.
The Riverbats took advantage of wild Dodger pitching in the 1st inning to take a 2-0 lead but the Dodgers bounced right back in the 2nd with three runs to take their only lead of the game. Zach Kinkeade (St. Charles CC) scored on a wild pitch, Brett Lancaster (SIU-Edwardsville) hit a sac fly to score Trey Bennett (Mercyhurst), and Andrew Jesse (St. Joesph's) singled home Abe Steinbach (Emporia State).
Brockport took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd when Corey Taylor hit a two-out three-run homer over the left center field fence to make it 5-3.
Adam Eggemeyer (SIU-Edwardsville) led of the Dodger 3rd inning with a towering fly over the right field fence for his third homer of the season. He finishes the year with three round trippers and a team high 30 RBI.
Brockport added a single run in the 4th on a bases loaded walk and another insurance run in the 6th inning on a throwing error.
The Dodgers had chances but couldn't get the big hit to put any more runs on the board. The Riverbats also made some sparkling plays in the field.
Kinkeade finished 2 for 4 while Greg Laughlin (SW Minnesota State) was 2 for 5 as the Dodgers out-hit the Riverbats 9 to 6. No Riverbat had multiple hits but Brockport took advantage of 15 Dodger pitcher walks.
Adam Gray (Mercyhurst) allowed just one unearned run in three innings of relief work while Aren Cummings (SIU-Edwardsville) struck out six in two innings of scoreless relief for the Dodgers.
Tom Fishback allowed four runs in five innings to earn the victory while the Riverbat bullpen allowed just three hits and two walks in the final four innings to seal the victory.
Brockport will take on the Amsterdam or Glens Falls in the NYCBL Championship series beginning on Thursday.
The Dodgers finish the campaign 34-13 and were the Western Division regular season champions. The Blue and White had winning records vs. every team in the league except for Brockport (2-6).
The Dodgers will be well represented on the NYCBL All-Star team which will be announced early next week. |
