In 1997 four Clayton High School students: Dan Miller, Alden Cadwell, Bill Peisker, and Justin Goldman had the vision and the drive to start a lacrosse team. Through their vision the Clayton High School Lacrosse Team was born. As a club sport, the players with the support of their parents, were required to raise funds, recruit players and coaches on their own. Those players along with their parents, knew very little about the sport, and ventured out to find someone with knowledge of the game along with the passion and commitment to lead the team. That person was Mike O’Brien.
O’Brien, a Clayton attorney, was a goalie and former team captain for the University of Missouri Tigers. He also served as a Missouri lacrosse official. O’Brien decided to take time away from his legal practice and volunteer as the team’s Head Coach. Along with his friend and former Missouri teammate Dave Torrance as his assistant, the Greyhounds embarked upon the team‘s first season. The Greyhounds’ first year was spent at the Junior Varsity level competing with 20 players of which only
two had previous playing experience. The team played an 11 game season and finished with an overall record of 4-7. The first ever franchise win was a thrilling overtime victory against now conference rival, the Vianney Griffins.
The 1998 season marked the teams first as a Varsity program. Hosting a roster of 22 players the Hounds finished with a 4-7 Varsity record.
2007 represents the 10th year as a Varsity program. The team has grown in each succeeding year with roster sizes now averaging 50 players a year for the Varsity and JV combined.
The Clayton Lacrosse Program is very proud of its growth and accomplishments over the past 10 years, and is happy to announce that over our brief history Clayton has had more than 20 players go on to play at the collegiate level.
